replicate synologys to remote sites
I am setting up a dr solution for a few O365 accounts, one file server and a hand full of VM's. i am looking at the Synology series as previously recommended in a different EE post. https://www.experts-exchange.com/questions/29182207/Office-365-Back-Ups.html
I went with the RS820RP+ with a dual 10GB fiber NIC and 4 x 10 TB Seagate Drives. I am using this unit for testing purposes only at this time since i already had the drives and the unit was inexpensive.
What i would like to do is buy two larger 12 bay units and have one on premise and the other off site. THe problem is at the off site location, there is no managed firewall, and or static IP's or VPN tunnel. Is there a way to replicate the synologys to each other via some type of cloud association? I read about creating a VPN tunnel on the synologys but i would presume i need a static at the remote site.
Im new to SYnology so reading as much as i can. Help is appreciated

I am not planning to use Veeam.
Nolook at whether using synology network you can tie the ones you have through which to get the data across.
It has a backup sync app, but a secure connection needs to exist.

Arnold. This is what i was getting at if a VPN tunnel is going to be needed.

Arnold. Thanks for the link. Since the devices sit behind an Sonicwall NSA 3600 series. Im thinking i just need to get another Sonicwall for VPN.
Yes, that will be in front of the synology at the other side, you could then have the VPn connecting the two on a time base to allow access for the replication while isolating from potential comp.
Nothing even a similar unit in a DR that eliminates the need for a dedicated backup setup that has the data separate and offline/offsite

arnold, after reading the link you posted https://www.synology.com/en-global/dsm/feature/cloud_service this looks like it just allows access to the Synology from a browser over WAN. Not the actual replication. It looks like a VPN tunnel is the best bet then set up replication
Yes, VPN is straight forward. The link is a way to access data throu synology and would likely be costly fi there is a massive amount of data being pushed through it
Have you looked at a tape library via a SAS HBA or use local external USBs to use as backups.as one goes, the more options, backups the better.

arnold. we already take snapshots of the VM, snapshots of the SAN, replicate the SAN on site to another SAN. We just need to get our offsite policy in shape. USB devices are not best for our situation.
Verify this is correct, to have a solid starting point for comments.
