Acitve Directory network account username change to userid.domain

Hello Expert .

we have few users has reported their user Id changed by itself to userID.Domain should be UserID only , this is only showing in command line example below when they tried to log in to laptop . or if you go to windows explorer C:\users

some user has 2 windows profiles created on c drive .
1- C:\Users\userID
2- C:\Users\userid.MYDOMAIN

causing some application to run properly.

when I go to CMD and type set enter

TEMP=C:\Users\userID~1.MYDOMAIN\AppData\Local\Temp
TMP=C:\Users\USERID~1.MYDOMAIN\AppData\Local\Temp
UATDATA=C:\WINDOWS\CCM\UATData\D9F8C395-CAB8-491d-B8AC-179A1FE1BE77
USERDNSDOMAIN=MYDOMAIN.INTERNAL
USERDOMAIN=MYDOMAIN
USERDOMAIN_ROAMINGPROFILE=MYDOMAIN
USERNAME=USERID
USERPROFILE=C:\Users\USERID.MYDOMAIN
windir=C:\WINDOWS

Hello There

This might happen if you log on to the computer with the same account name that has a different SID. Is it possible that someone created a local user with the same name?

For instance, a domain user is named "user1". The path to the user folder should be C:\Users\user1.
However, someone creates a local user before named "user1". After the local user "user1" logs in, the path to his user folder will be C:\Users\user1 and the path to the domain user folder will be C:\Users\user1.domain.

I assume it might also happen when you copy C:\Users\user1 from an old system to a new system before a domain user "user1" logs in. Then the system sees C:\Users\user1, therefore creates C:\Users\user1.domain.

hello there,

thank you for your response
how do I find out if the SID is different and the user name is the same, is any sripts I can run to identify SID on local PC and ACtive directory.

I will speak to the window migration team and found out how the copying profile. I believe they run also script on old local machine and then the give new laptop to the user to log in .

I will update you soon .
You can verify it here:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList

I thought about it a bit and if you recreated a user in AD, this might be another reason for this behavior.
Hi Hello there ,

what i found out too .
if my user logged in with the following it will create  local user profile .

we have 2 domains one legacy domain (windows 7 users)
and
second is lets call it Second Domain (windows 10 users)
Example :
if the user1 logged in with legacydomain\User1 and enter his password , my question is here what should the user local profile(C:\Users\user1) call is it User1 or User.legacydomain.

and if the same user1 try to log in with SecondDomain\User1 to same laptop what is the profile name folder call please C:\Users\user1.secondDomain.  or User1 . i hope i explained good .

last question please:

I have notice on different laptops :
when i go to C:\Users\ and i see about 10 users profile who logged in to this machine previously ( last month or last year the ) in the DATE Modified changed to today day or before . and they never logged in to this computer during my logging in to this laptop  (only one user using this laptop ) . please help me with this one .

if you need me to submit another request happy to do that.

Thank you in advance .

if the user1 logged in with legacydomain\User1 and enter his password , my question is here what should the user local profile(C:\Users\user1) call is it User1 or User.legacydomain.
I guess that the domain user would be in C:\Users\user1 and the local user would be in C:\Users\user1.COMPUTERNAME

and if the same user1 try to log in with SecondDomain\User1 to same laptop what is the profile name folder call please C:\Users\user1.secondDomain.  or User1 . i hope i explained good .
I am not sure if I understand this one.
