Having trouble exporting or dragging transparent ai files into photoshop without backgrounds

I can't figure out what I'm missing here. I've downloaded many vectors in the past and this problem is 50-50:

The vector is to be used for its transparency, however, it has the checkered Photoshop background in the image to demonstrate this. No matter what I try, I can't get rid of that checkered image when I export at psd or drag the vector into a photoshop document.

Is there a trick to this?

I've attached an image I purchased as a vector and I exported as psd. I was able to turn off the background checkered pattern, but the screen boarder seems to be attached to the checkered screen on one layer.

Do you have access to Adobe Illustrator? If so, I'd suggest importing as a smart object, then double clicking the layer to edit in Illustrator. This way, you can edit the file to your liking but play with the final composition in Photoshop. Without the file, I'm guessing that maybe that checkered layer is nested in one of the deeper vector groups.

Hi Emily!
I do have access to illustrator. I've been opening it in AI and dragging to Photoshop. That's how I discovered the checkered background is on the same layer as inner black frames of the devices. I've attached the file.
