Backup and recovery Strategy for Office 365

Hi

We have moved to 0365.Recently , from the management  I had a litigation enquires for a staff  and when I ran the eDiscovery on the 0365 admin center ,  the user has deleted all the emails from the deleted mail box and unfortunately it had exceeded the default 14 days retention period.

Henceforth if emails are deleted from user’s mailbox and if a litigation enquires arises, I must be in a position to recover the deleted emails from a user’s mail box.
We use Veeam (Backup and replication 9.5) to back up virtual servers onsite and I was told the Veeam can do a 0365 backup on site.

Please suggest the best way to move forward. I have a meeting and need to advise the management with appropriate solution to recover mails in the event of litigation enquires.
Your suggestions much appreciated.

Thanks

Hello

After 14 days of retention, the better is to use eDiscorvery to search messages deleted by user.
Usually this action is not done often, so there is no need to do backup for that.

If you use backup solution (like Veam of Synology Nas, or other), you will be able to find easily the messages,  because backup software will keep folder's structure.

I understand Only if the Inplace hold  and Litigation hold is enabled then we can recover the deleted messaged even after 14 days retention period  through eDiscovery ?
and you can go to the exact point in time, and look at the mailbox, and the exact contents of the mailbox will be available.
Apologies was not able to submit feedback  earlier!
Thanks for your help
