Probably because this old server is hosting an old or legacy application & that software that was already installed is not or no longer compatible with the Windows updates or service pack?

without being able to see logs (\windows\logs\cbs\checksur.log?), nearly impossible to tell what happened or why
how was the service pack installed?  through windows update?  if so, did you have other updates selected?  would suggest selecting the service pack only and try again

MS Internet updates, I’ll try the service pack first, probably the old installed software is not compatible with it

I don't think so. It's possible that something just went wrong and the next time it will pass. Maybe another update is required before installing the service pack... Anyway, we need more info. Which update (KB) are you trying to install? What error message do you get?
