AD Backup

In preparation for Installing an Exchange CU, I recently backed up one of my DCs system state using Windows Backup.  I also have a Daily VSS Snap in AWS of the server.

Just double checking whether this is sufficient for DR.   Since I have the AWS snap, my thought is I don't need to setup a bare metal recovery full backup in Windows.

You shouldn't run Exchange on a DC. It's not recommended as well as using snapshots on a domain controller.

What server OS is being used? Since 2012, Snapshots are a supported method, but look at this https://www.provirtualzone.com/backup-virtual-domain-controllers/

There is more than one company (some international in scope) affected by ransomware who are very happy they had a system state backup of their AD from which to restore. I recommend AD be backed up every day.

Here is one cautionary tale: https://redmondmag.com/blogs/scott-bekker/2018/08/domain-controller-nightmare.aspx
