asked on

Are MAC addresses unique

Hi
1)
Is it possible that two devices have same Mac address ?
As per my understanding Mac addresses are burner in NIC chips and they are ensured to be unique..

2) Is it possible for a PC or device to change Mac address ?

Thanks

So when you change Mac address by mac spoofing...the original Mac address remain intact...but it's just the software that gives an impression that device has a different Mac address ...is that correct ?

MAC is only relevant within the local network. A duplicate MAC will make the network unstable at best
Why are up addresses required then..as Mac addresses are unique...so mac will anyway identify the correct device...

Also do you mean that over a wan Mac addresses are not used ?

Rohit,
Difference between MAC address and IP address is, MAC is used to identify the physical address of device and IP does same thing on Software level. MAC address is relevant within a internal network while IP address is relevant in both inside the internal network as well as multiple networks (read Internel). A device can have multiple IP addresses but only single MAC address.
