Moving an older VM from a 2008 host to a new 2019 Hyper-V host

We have a VM that is currently running some legacy software that we can't reinstall. It is on a 2008R2 host but the VM is 2012 Server. We are upgrading our host to a 2019 Hyper-V Host. I understand the two are not compatible if I try to move one to the other directly. Is there another way to move or import the VM from our old 2008R2 Host to eventually run on our new Host?

The new host will not see the VHD files. I have tried converting them but I get an error that says the VM is in use by another machine? It is being stored on the new Host and is not in an "open" state as far as I can tell. Everything I read says my two hosts aren't compatible.
Are you saying I don't have to convert my original VHD to a VHDX?
I have tried to do a fresh export from the 2008R2 host. When I browse to the share with the new host (2019), it can't find the files. I am sure it is because it is looking for VHDX files. If I try to do an edit from the new machine and browse to the share, I get an error that says "Unable to edit virtual disk. The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process". Probably the export process.
Any ideas?
