Sweet UX/UI for a Topic with Maybe 20 Categories Containing a Couple of Hundred Articles in Total

Need some inspiration for organizing around 400 articles around 20 topics.

Here's my thinking - with an actual 3-dimensional object, like Ye Olde Handbook - anyone ever take a trip overseas back in the good old days and recall the tattered Fodor's guides?  Back in those olden times, one had only a handful of seeming useful ways to organize a ton of data: printed pages / books / tabs, etc.

Yet!  They were...surprisingly useful, developed such as they were over...600+ years of the printed page.

The online / onscreen world has lead to much beauty but...sometimes that seems to come at the expense of usability?

If you've seen any designs that are AWESOME in terms of how they go from index to article with a HUGE number of articles organized via several categories in an online presentation...please could you post the links?

Something that is not Wikipedia - as it seems almost clinically disconnected from the content.  Something where the organization is at once a reflection / integrates the topic itself, somehow.

Something where a user feels LESS of the burden of navigating the link structure and more of the "Oh!  I've got it.  I'll need to turn left here." that a nicely laid out big building has.

Seems like Phone & Desktop is a natural divider here.  But...if there's one that's both!  Then, even BETTER!

Sincerely,

OT
