Best Virus Software and Why

I have been reading for hours on anti-virus software with varying opinions with no physical evidence to support them. I just don't know what to choose. What do you think is best and why?

Like everyone, I want to buy a anti-virus software that is the best at:
   * Keeping my files safe from harm
   * Preventing theft of my files
   * Preventing unauthorized access/collection (i.e,. webcam, microphone, viewing, key logging etc.,)
   * Encrypting USB drives so my files are safe if USB lost

I look at Kaspersky, which seems awesome, but it is affiliated with Russia; which concerns some people a bit. Then I look at other anti-virus softwares and people say it concerns them that is is made in China or USA. Then there is open source anti-virus software. Doesn't open source mean any hacker can read the code and find a way past it? It's all so confusing with no 'proof' to back up claims.

I don't mind paying. I just want to hear what you think is best followed by information to support your opinion.

Thanks everyone. Is there any anti-virus software out there that you would not trust and for what reason? (i.e., Anyone use BitDefender, AVAST, Total AV etc.,? Any reason you would not trust/use them?) Btw. I don't mind paying. I would actually pay well for an anti-virus with real metrics proving why they are the best.

AV/AM is the last line of defense.  The first line of defense that works the best is the interface between the desktop and the chair.

Sometimes this is not about trust but performance/capabilities. I've seen antiviruses slow down the system significantly (Avast, AVG, etc.) so I would not choose them. This is something you need to bear in mind too.

If you check the link I provided, you can get useful info. I do trust this site.
virus are not the only unwanted ones : popups; advertisements, and installs that carry other installs with them (often free soft)
