PowerPoint 2016 - Page numbers appear in Layout but appear on some -- not all-- actual slides - How to Fix

I have a slide layout that's used by about 30 various pages in a PPT deck. The layout contains the page number code.  Some of the slides using this layout are displaying the page number at the bottom of the slide. Others are showing nothing. It's as though the layout had no page number symbol?
How can I fix this so that all slides using this layout are displaying the page number, just as it appears in the layout.

Someone may have manually deleted the slide number in that ppt. Go to individual slide and choose Insert>Header footer and turn slide number back on. Additionally, sometimes just clicking the Reset button on the Home tab will resolve
If not, confirm that those layouts have the placeholder for slide number in your Slide Master view

Hi Karen:
I can place the page number on the slide using INSERT => HEADER/FOOTER slide number check box..No problem there.

However, that method places an object on the actual slide which my users can accidentally move/delete.  What I'd like is for the page number field to appear on layout so that the page number appears on the slide but the not the text object containing the field. My end users always wind up moving things around on the slide and not having the actual page number text box on the slide would give them one less thing to accidentally move around.

Hi brothertruffle880, that is by design so that one can remove a page number adhoc for a slide that contains a graph, for example. If users move that placeholder, a simple Reset from the home page should over ride that. It is actually the case with text boxes and all place holders on the slide master. I don't know a way to put the placeholder on the slide master that will disallow someone from changing it.
Hi Karen:
I'm on slide number 13. I click INSERT => HEADER & FOOTER.=> I check the Footer box and I get the footer place holder on my slide.

That's not what I want.
The other slides in my desk have page numbers but do not have the placeholder.  The page numbers on my other slides have somehow cascaded from the underlying layout.  The page numbers are displayed but there's no placeholder on the actual slide. That's what I want on page 13.  .
Upload a sample PPT so I can troubleshoot
