MS PowerPoint 2016 - Auto numbering keeps bolding my numbers but I only want the first word bold, NOT my numbers

I have a numbered list inside a placeholder and want the first word bolded.  The problem is that whenever I bold the first word, the NUMBER is also bolded!  I don't want that! I just want the first word bold.  This is in PowerPoint.  Earlier, I mistakenly stated that the problem was inside of WORD.

How are you setting your first word to bold? I tried to duplicate your results by highlighting the first word and selecting bold, but my numbers did not change. One thing you can try is to right-click the number and select Font. Set the Font Style to regular.

Paul
I can't duplicate that effect either. I select the first word, click on Home>Bold button as it works as expected.
Typically that happens if the paragraph mark is bolded. Click the paragraph symbol on the the home tab to show/hide. Select the paragraph symbol and turn off bolding

Ugggh!
APOLOGIES TO EVERYONE.
This is happening in PowerPoint, not MS Word. (Brain fog yesterday.)
Apologies.  I have attached a video of the behavior.
I tried double-clicking the word, then selecting it using SHIFT + arrow. Same result.
Karen:  I tried selecting the last (invisible) hard return and unbolding that but I'm still getting the bolded number.
