Freeware to 'widen' a video
I got a video which is probably for certain aspect ratio & when I
played on my current HD TV & Win10 PC, the video appeared
'compressed' ie the figures/objects all appear as 'slim'.
Is there anyway to convert it to 'normal' width (while retaining its
audio & resolution), using say VLC & do provide me screen shots
of how to to this. I have Debut video capture software as well.

Thanks Kimputer for the elaborate solutions. I would explore VLC 1st & if it doesn't
have a 'converter' function, will test out the other tools.
>If you just play the video with VLC and don't have the player set to full screen is ok?
In VLC full screen, it's still 'squeezed' : refer to attached screen shot of VLC in full screen:
both left & right sides have "dark empty spaces":

Thanks Kim, I may not quite understand that portion.
When I play using VLC, default aspect ratio there are dark areas on left & right
& after adjusting Aspect Ratio to 2:39:1 as shown in attached screen the dark
areas became less & the video doesn't appear 'compressed' anymore:
Before (ie default aspect ratio):

After adjust to 2:39:1:

I think it's the Aspect Ratio which upon tweaking in
VLC, gave the 'right width': just that I have to record
the video for a couple hours just to convert it or is
there a way/tool to just convert it (without losing the
audio & video quality?
