Troubleshooting Question

Quad Core? Six Core? Eight Core?   How much Difference Does Each Increment Make?

I'm shopping for a new laptop and want to know:

Is spending the extra money to go from Quad Core to Six Core worth it?
How about spending extra to go from Six Core to Eight Core?

I'm doing video editing. Sometimes I'm forced to edit on a laptop "in the field". I know desktops are better.  This is not a question about how I should not buy a notebook to edit videos.

My question is about "dollars per core" .  Is the dollar jump from quad core to six core worth it?  Is the dollar jump from six to eight worth it?  Did you notice the speed difference?  Does anyone notice the speed difference?

Sometimes I have to edit "in the field". I know desktops are better.

Short answer is yes, especially with the sort of work you're going to be carrying out. Video editing/rendering is extremely resource heavy. The more you spend on the equipment you're using the better your experience will be.

I upgraded from a quad to a 6-core MacBook Pro, and I do notice a difference in render times.

As a digital nomad and moto bum, I can also attest to Dr. Klahn's warning regarding heat. I've often had to render in the field, and I pack a cooling pad despite limited motorcycle luggage. It's that important.

Other note, I realize this is not a laptop, but look at how they sell the difference in cores: https://www.apple.com/imac-pro/ under "Strength in numbers."

Moto bum. I guess she likes her motor bike a lot :)

By moto bum, I mean that I spent several years traveling with nothing but my motorcycle; no home or rental. You mentioned needing to edit "in the field" and during that time, I was always in the field. Sometimes I had to hunt down power or wifi, but being able to complete work anywhere was important. :)
