I do not see categories in the tag tab. I only see Follow up Flag.

How do I go about enabling Categories in my inbox in the ribbon on the top. I used to be able to do that when I had POP configuration . Now that I have IMAP it is gone. though I can add it as a column but I am limited to only one color RED.

Thank you,

Nope, IMAP does not support categories. Your emails remain stored on the server, and local changes are applied to that server, so it needs to be compatible.
IMAP only knows of a "mark", and that is what you see as "red".

I got a message saying : Commands need to be added to custom groups. To create a group pick a tab in the list, then click new group.
There is no reason to try anything - you can't do that!
"There is no reason to try anything - you can't do that!"

Why do you say that? If I would to follow the suggested instructions that came up on the screen. You don't think that will work? I was hoping that an Expert would comment on the instructions that I posted and say something as it will work or not. If NOT why am I getting that message instructing me to do what is suggested by Microsoft.

Thank you,

I did what was suggested but for some reason it is still does not work. I even renamed the custom group to Categories. It did not make any difference. Any work around that? Why does IMAP does not allow ribbon cusomization?
Adding an option to the Ribbon Bar does not mean you can use that option in the current context. It doesn't do anything more than allow you to choose from the ribbon instead of context menu or similar.
IMAP does not allow for categories. Point. There is no workaround.

Why are you using IMAP? What is the main reason? Maybe you should/can switch to POP3.

Andrew,

"If you need to use categories, you need to use a POP3 account instead or move the messages to a local pst file. In place of flags (and their reminders), drag the message to Tasks (or Calendar) and set the reminder"

How do I move the messages to a local pst file? How do I drag the messages to Tasks and set the reminder?

"While a viewing a folder in a data file that supports categories, expand the Categories button and choose All Categories to open the Color Category manager"

How do I accomplish that?

Thank you Andrew,
Basem Khawaja

I stand corrected, but
  1. changes stay local, the IMAP server does not know of the assigned categories
  2. you do not need to copy over to a PST file to be able to set a category. I'm having a PST file for other purposes, that might be the reason. If I read correctly, you need at least one local PST file for this workaround - maybe only for setting up a shortcut for categories, maybe to keep the category info (but I don't think so).
