When using Office 365 for the Web, is there a way to identify local office files?

We are migrating users to Office 365 for the Web and copying their data to OneDrive. However, they still have shared files locally. These will be moved to SharePoint eventually, once everyone is migrated. Even then, we are only migrating files modified within the past year.

Is there a way to identify the office files once office has been removed from their computers? Since there is no app to set as default for the extension, the files just look the same. I was hoping there would be a way to temporarily set the default icon for the files. We can't be the only people with this issue.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Hi
You should keep the files in OneDrive only, to identify them properly with online office.
Please see this link.

I think what you are really asking is if there is a way to associate files like .docx to open up with ms word online. I don't think that is possible.

Are you not going to have office365 desktop apps?
As you are migrating everything to Office Online, I would like to share this nice document explaining the advantages and limitations. It's worth to read.

We are planning to keep the files in OneDrive only and shared files in SharePoint. During the migration, there are some shared files that need to be in both locations due to how they are shared. We just want to be able to indicate which files are word, excel, etc. for those who have migrated. This is temporary until we migrate everyone.

I know, clear as mud. :-)
