Websockets in java

What is a websocket ?
Is it something specially related to java
And why it's used.
As per my current knowledge it's like
What http call does is create a new connection everytime.
But websocket is like a channel opened between two machines and so each message doesn't have the overhead.

And communication is maintained between two machines

Is that correct ?
Although must be a naive way to say it.

Any more inputs to it
