Stop EE pinching a tab in Firefox

When I have multiple tabs open in Firefox and click on a question at EE the question is opened not in a new tab but (at least sometimes) in one of the tabs I currently have open thus effectively closing the content that was in that tab. How to stop that from happening?

Maybe I am wrong to blame EE, I am actually reusing a tab that EE originally opened to buy something on eBay and then when I look at a new EE question it grabs that tab back. Screenshots to follow...

Have you got "open links in new tabs" set as an option?
Open links in tabs instead of new windows is ticked.
Have a look at the about:config settings for the options referenced in the page at the link below:

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1258193

in particular, browser.link.open_newwindow which should be set to 3
Yep, browser.link.open_newwindow  = 3
Far too hard to paste screenshots into an open EE question so used wordpad, see upload.
EEtabs.rtf
your RTF file is just numbers! you cannot paste images directly to EE - you should save the screenshots and upload...

to upload images, click on the 'Picture' icon (4th from the right) => Insert Image or CTRL-P and select the image files to upload

are you quite sure your Firefox is up to date
Hmm, can't download it either ATM. so I'll describe...

Open firefox with EE as homepage.
Click EE logo so another tab appears
Use second tab for something else
Click first tab to browse EE and select a question.

A third tab appears on most websites but for EE the second tab is reused.
most ee links use target=_blank so they should never reuse a tab.
i do not remember seeing the same issue but i usually use "open in a new tab" out of habit.
btw, clicking a link with a middle click does the same.
can you tell us which link you tried ?
sorry we cross posted

i do not use ee as the home page, but im my case clicking the logo does not create a new tab so i cannot reproduce the issue.

i would assume ee has a javascript that names the window and/or the browser does something unexpected

can you try and track window.name accross tabs ?

in my case, the source code of the answer page clearly uses _blank but i did not dig into javascripts that may supersede the target
