Troubleshooting Question

Problem with Git after fresh installation

Last Modified: 2020-11-21
Hello, I'm a total Git newbie, I've compiled the latest version on a Centos 6 machine but now I don't know what to do to make it actually work.

I've tried, following guides, to define my personal user with

git config --global user.name "John Doe"
but as soon as I do that I get this error:

fatal: not in a git directory

Not sure what to do now.
