Protect NAS and Computer data from Ransomware

Hi,

My friends NAS (Zyxel NAS542 -> The Manual) was infected yesterday with MARS Ransomware. The NAS used RAID 1 mirror, so both of the hard drives were encrypted.

He had some backup from last week, so not all data is gone.

Question 1: The NAS has full and incremental backup functions, has USB ports to add other external drives and SD cards.
What strategy can I use to protect my friends NAS from future ransomware?

Question 2:
What software can we use for protecting the PCs? Malwarebytes and Windows Defender softwares will be enough?
