MacOS External Disk Disk partitioning for TimeMachine??

I have a handy 4T external drive I formatted for my MacBook so I could use it as an external drive, Not a TimeMachine drive. But, Now, I wish to allocate part of the drive, for example 3T, for TimeMachine.

Is that possible?

If I must, I can remove 100% of the files on the disk for a reformatting, then copy back certain files to the 1T.

Thanks

Do I use Disk Utility? From what I recall, Time Machine will take over the whole thing.
