Adobe Flash Player

I would like to know why is Adobe Flash Player(AFP) will no longer be available after December 30th, 2020? Also, what programs are comparable to AFP that can be recommended as an alternative?

Thank you,

Alternatives to Adobe Flash Player for all platforms

https://alternativeto.net/software/flash-player/

we had some flash projects and now we have some tools / plug-in for Power Point, that converts the project to HTML5
we use this tool for interactive online courses for clients and customers...

Hi Bassem,
Yes true adobe will block Flash content from running in Flash Player beginning of January 12, 2021 and this to help secure user browsing the internet and they will stop creating patches update. Moreover the major browser vendors will continue to disable Flash Player from running after the End of life date.

what programs are comparable to AFP that can be recommended as an alternative
You several programs that can do the same for example Microsoft Silverlight and Adobe shockwave player...

Flash has been deprecated for some time.  It was always full of bugs, many of which were serious enough to allow a system to be infected through Flash files.

My own opinion is that Flash got such a bad reputation that became unprofitable for Adobe to support and maintain a product with a bad security reputation.

If the need is to display video files in a browser, the HTML 5 standard supports this in all modern browsers.

Dr.Klahn,

What is the HTML5 ? and how do I use it? Is it something that I need to download?

Thank you,

Basem Khawaja
Elie,

Which Microsoft Silverlight do I need to download? The plain one or the 64-bit? Is Microsoft Silverlight and Adobe Shockwave Player are equally the same in performance and security ? What do you recommend?

Use the 64bit.
They are not better than flash player and will be discontinued. Best option as recommended by Dr.Klhan to stick to HTML5 for better security
Elie,

So the Microsoft Silverlight and Adobe Shockwave Player  will be discontinued as well!  is it for the same reason security vulnerability? aren't the patches or security good enough to keep these products available to people to continue using? I asked Dr.Klahn in the previous post the following and I am still waiting for a reply" What is the HTML5 ? and how do I use it? Is it something that I need to download?

1) I would like to know why is Adobe Flash Player(AFP) will no longer be available after December 30th, 2020?

Because Flash is so slow + hackable, it simple couldn't be fixed.

Adobe provided a 5+ year deprecation period, so all code should be changed by now.

2) Also, what programs are comparable to AFP that can be recommended as an alternative?

As Dr. Klahn suggestion, use straight HTML5, which can do everything Flash can do + much more.
Suggestion: Open a new question where you describe your current code + ask for input about how others might port this from Flash to some other coding alternative.

Tip: While Flash is still working, make videos of every Flash file, so you have an archive of functionality you'll be reworking... which Flash still exists...
I would like to know why is Adobe Flash Player(AFP) will no longer be available after December 30th, 2020?

However, Flash Player has become increasingly criticized for its performance, consumption of battery on mobile devices, the number of security vulnerabilities that had been discovered in the software, and its closed platform nature.

sites that have been using flash are getting off of it and using HTML5 as the alternative which does not impact the end-user.  Essentially, unless you have a site or service that relies on flash where they haven't redesigned their site then that is really their problem, not yours.  It is the responsibility of site developers to get off this technology and use something more modern

What is the HTML5 ? and how do I use it? Is it something that I need to download?
it is a way that web sites are designed in that your browser can interpret; it is natively available and not something extra you need to download

BTW, if you have VLC Player, it can play downloaded SWF or FLV shockwave/flash files independently of the browser.
Seth,

Thank you for answering my previously posted question that no one answered except you. So I just want to make sure that I understand you clearly. Does my Brave or Edge browser have the HTML5 feature built in it? If so, can I go head and uninstall the AFP now and still be able to view if there is any flash content on a website that requires flash player?

Thank you Seth,
Basem Khawaja
Peter,

I do have the VLC player. But I was referring to visiting a website using Brave or Edge browser if I will still be able to view flash enabled contents through these 2 browsers?

Thank you Peter,
Basem Khawaja
Can someone help answer my question please?

Thank you,

Basem Khawaja
Yes try brave, is a very good browser
https://html5test.com provides a tester where you can visit + get a dump of all your browsers HTML5 compliance + compatibility data.
Keep in mind all browsers + VLC all support Flash via plugins. None provide native (non-plugin) Flash support.

When the plugin hits EOL (End Of Life) in a few weeks, shortly thereafter likely all will stop working, including VLC.

Now is the time to record videos of all your Flash content, so you have an archive useful for migrating to HTML5 or some other tech.
David,

Thank you for your reply. My Brave score was 523/555. Is that a good score? is there a cut off for these scores ? meaning 90-100% A, 80-89% B, C etc... The last thing what I am not too clear about is the EOL. So when AFP ends what I understood from all the posts here that I will still be able to view Flash enabled content through my browser. Though you mentioned that I need to record videos of Flash contents ??? Can you explain that in an easier way? Do I still need to download a plug-in for Brave.

Thank you,
Basem Khawaja
Basem,

Are you consuming Flash as a user of a site you do not control?  Or are you trying to update a website you do control?

If you are updating a site you do control, what format are your current videos in now? Are the videos in mp4 as example and you are using flash as a player to show remote (on the same server) videos? Or is the video embedded in Flash?  If it is embedded in Flash, do you have the original videos that you can recreate in another format such as mp4 or ogg?

If it is your own site, I think the question, "why is it going away" has been answered and the real question should be what should I do going forward.

If you have just a few visitors to your site and the visitors are relatively near your server (at least same country), you could stream your videos form the server using html5/javascript.  Really the best option for video is to store them on a cdn like Amazon https://aws.amazon.com/cloudfront/ or Cloudflare https://www.cloudflare.com/products/stream-delivery/ or fastly https://www.fastly.com/products/media-and-streaming or https://www.keycdn.com/video-cdn just to name a few.

What will happen is you upload the video once, and the video can stream from a number of their servers that are optimized for video giving your users the best best experience. They also tend to come with their own players so you can just embed them on your site and not worry about coding. Cloudflare is free but you have to update your dns to their name server. If you just have a few videos or your user base is not very large, serving on your web server will work fine.
