How to automatically add content to a post using a URL

When I add a link to a Facebook or LinkedIN post, content from the link is automatically added to the post. How do they decide what part of the page to display? I want to do something similar in my blogging tool that I am creating. I am using Coldfusion and javascript. I realize I can use CFHTTP to get the content of the entire page but that is not what I necessarily want to show on my blog post.

I am guessing that Facebook finds the open graph data in the meta tags. Ie, meta tags with: property="og:description"

What is the easiest way to get this data? Do I need to write something that searches the content for these properties?

I don't think I am explaining my question clearly. I will try again.

If I add the url bambora.com on a facebook post content from their site is automatically added to my facebook post:. For example, it looks something like:

I would like to do something similar in the blogging tool that I am writing. Ie, if someone enters a url I want the blogging tool to automatically extract the same information that Facebook did and display the same content in the post.
