Help Me Save Big Bucks! :D

Hi!

For whatever reason, my laptop these days, about every 10 or 15 minutes freezes.

Got GREAT help here to determine if my recently dropped laptop had any issues with its 1TB SSD.

Seems like the drive is OK.

I work with Office (Word & Outlook) most of the day and Chrome with multiple tabs open as well as a PDF reader, or two! :D

I tried disabling all plugins on Chrome.  No difference.

What I experience is this: the browser just become unresponsive.  Could be at the top of a page.  In the middle.  Wherever I am using the browser, it just locks up.

Only by alt-tabbing to another app and then returning to Chrome does it start to become interactive again.

And the, usually with that, it's good for about another 15 minutes, or so.

While I THOUGHT it was just a Chrome thing, I've noticed the same using Edge.

I ran a full Norton Antivirus scan - all clear.

I'm thinking to take the unit in and have the RAM reseated, as that was suggested in the thread I linked to above, seeing as how I dropped the laptop god and hard recently.

What is my best course of action?  REALLY don't want to have to buy a new PC right now.

Sincerely,

OT

I would remove Norton and use the Built-In AV. As a 1st step.

Consider installing W10 from scratch.
Try creating a new user profile then login as that user and see if it does the same thing. May be profile corruption.

As HainKurt already suggested — Do you see any error IDs or messages in Event Viewer under the System or Application sections of the Windows logs?

Can you also try turning off the hardware acceleration in Chrome and Edge?

Do you have any pending OS updates available to run?

I would also try installing Process Monitor:

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/downloads/procmon

i also suggest a fresh install - be sure to have a good backup first  !
what model pc is this?

another option not mentioned is a factory restore of the pc manufacturer
factory restore of the pc manufacturer
if you go with re-install, do a factory reset since you may have some custom drivers needed for your hardware provided only by manufacturer...
that's what i suggested - why twice??

If you not comfortable with dismantling the laptop, take it to a repair shop for diagnosis

factory reset will take 5-10 minutes and testing is another 5-10 minutes...
in these pandemic days, I prefer resetting first :)

Hi Kurt,

About the factory reset: how do I proceed?  Will that uninstall all my programs and erase the disk?

Sincerely,

OT
Hi, All!

Detailed reply in minutes.  Right next door to Computer shop.
Hi, All!

Strivoli - disable Norton?  Seems unsafe?

Kurt - Errors - see below.

William - profile.  Will try!  Does that give me access to all the same installed programs?

David - disk errors: none? chkdsk ok.  Overheating - will test.

Jazz - errors posted.  Proc mon & acceleration, will try.

Nobus - Acer E5-572
David - more about committed memory:User generated image

if you want to keep your app and all documents, then probably best option is try to find the issue and fix if it is related to software...

Because, if you keep all your app, then probably you will get the same issues,
+ you will find yourself in a worse situation...

I will never ever do such thing...
my preference order:

1. find/fix it
2. create a new user/profile and use that one
3. factory reset
4. fresh windows install

* for option 4: hope you dont have any custom drivers from manufacturer! if thats the case, you have to go to their site and download all necessary drivers and install/configure manually...

today, I fixed/cleaned up my sisters laptop...
she downloaded an app from a website, which is full of viruses/malwares, and she lost control of laptop :)

  • first, I installed glarry utilities
  • then uninstalled all malware apps (glarry)
  • after that, I turned off all startup apps (glarry)
  • then installed malwarebytes and scanned cleaned malwares
  • then used ESET Online scanner
  • then turned off all unwanted services, startup applications (skype/teamviewer etc) (glarry)
  • cleaned all temp files

then the laptop was ok..
I reset 2-3 times, no issue observed...
Hi, All!

Thanks, Kurt!  Seems like we're all in the same boat these days!

Just back from the local Acer store out here.  Major dealer in major city.  They said the temps are acceptable.

Asked them to reseat the RAM.  Will see what the results are.

Next: New Profile.

Will the new profile have all the same Apps?

Sincerely,

OT
Kurt,

When you ran the Malware bytes - it actually came up with viruses found?

Sincerely,

When you ran the Malware bytes - it actually came up with viruses found?
said 30 :) but most of them were duplicates I guess...
did not check all, since I used TeamViever and connection was very slow...

but I checked the folders it found and manually deleted those...
and I uninstalled Chrome browser, because it was controlled by a malwarebyte...
I could not change search engine for example, stuck with BING!
so, that was removed, after reboot, I installed it from google site again...
but when I uninstalled, I selected "delete all chrome files/settings", this part is important...

Scanning with malwarebytes now...

Hi, Jazz!

Yes - all updated in Windows.  Malwarebytes still running.  Will create that profile now.

Thanks for the link about DSIM.

Will post results!

Sincerely,

i would take the drive out of the laptop, connect it to a working pc and copy all the data over; to be sure you have a BACKUP !
then proceed with troubleshooting
i can tell you the temps seem ok, so probably you have no prioblem with fans, or CPU
i would open it and check all connectors
here's how :  Acer Aspire V5-572G disassembly – Inside my laptop
i would take the drive out of the laptop, connect it to a working pc
no need to open, just copy all data to an external HDD or usb stick
opening laptop is pain! I broke cover one of my laptop, and other laptop is slighly damaged :)
Hi Nobus,

Gotcha.  Still at work out here in the Far East, so haven't had a chance to make the new profile yet.  Is that something yo9u think I should try?

For what its worth, after reseating the RAM and doing the various malware scans, still seeing the issue - if only a weeeee bit less?

Will do on the full backup.  Using the app that Ghost became after it stopped being Ghost - Veritas System Recovery.

Somehow the Factory Restore with the keep apps & data seems...the least traumatic?

Hellothere suggested:

Your options are:
1. Reset the system with the "Keep my files" option.
Open Settings -> Update and Security -> Recovery -> Reset this PC -> Keep my files (this will keep data and some of your settings but not your apps)
2. Reinstall the system with Keep data, apps, settings
3. A clean installation. Backup data, install Windows from scratch, install apps, and copy data back. A clean installation is the best option.

I expand option 2 a bit:
1. Download Media Creation Tool from here: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10
2. Run it and create a bootable USB key
3. Bacup your data
4. Boot from the USB key and click Repair my PC
5. Now you have two options - a clean installation or reinstalling the system with keeping your apps, settings, and data.

Do you agree?  And, if yes, where would you start here among this list, or otherwise?

Sincerely,

OT

Hi Kurt,

I think you're right.

Ah!  But...one thing just occurred to me just now...OFFICE!

I'm PRETTY sure my Office 2016 was bought via the online store.  Seeing as how I LIVE out of Office & Tasks...right down to the sync from my Android phone...I think I need to wait until after the new year passes, and pick things up from Monday.

If I wind up having to make any calls to MS to get my Office back on the machine, I'd be dealing with any of three languages I'm not a native speaker of this evening - or over the long weekend - before I got to the USA desk.  And, each would staffed surely by the skeleton crew for the holidays.

Plus, that way I can do it FROM my office desk, and get folks to bail me out on the local team here should I get boxed in on the language front authorizing the re-install of an English version of Office purchased a few years back via MS Store's non-English website. (AND!  That's just if I'm remembering the provenance of everything correctly!  Sourcing could be even MORE recondite than I recall!)

What with the STACK of files I've got to plow through over the next few days, please bear with me all as I put the reset on hold 'til Monday.

Sincerely,

OT

Hi, All!

Still going to do this.  Trying to figure out the timelines here before I jump in.

@HainKurt - you wrote that going the Factory reset rout could take a little as 15 minutes.  Am I right?

Do I still need to Download Media Creation Tool from here: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10?

Or, will following the steps here: https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows8_1-update/factory-reset-acer-aspire-v5/8f3de3ca-67ed-415f-a392-672cca959e14?auth=1

bring me to a user-interface from which I can initiate the reset without the Media Creation Tool?

Sincerely,

BXR

Hi William!

That's a relief to know.  Office was the thing I was most dreading.

I'm confused about Factory Reset - which was said to take just 15 minutes, and a full reinstall.

Hellothere recommends:

And HainKurt suggests:
if you backup all files/app/passwords/keys etc  [which I do]
I recommend factory reset + reinstall your apps...
this is best option in my opinion...
keeping all apps may bring back same issues!
creating a new profile may put you in a position that you lose all personal settings and some of your apps will not work as is...
just more headache...

Seems like I may be conflating the two processes?

I guess what I'm HOPING for is fastest on the install new system.  I can bear the drudgery of installing ALLLLLLL the apps I've got to do.

Just hoping to keep the OS install time down to a minimum, if possible.

What's my best bet?

Sincerely,

OT
In both cases you would have to install apps, MS Office, copy data, etc. but here is a difference.
I suggest a clean and fresh installation.
Factory reset - it will reset the system to the original state with preloaded apps, etc. I don't consider it a clean installation.

And about the time... You can install a clean Windows 10 in 15 minutes. Then you can start setting your computer up.

And if this is all about the time, go for option 2 I posted above.

Hi,

Ah!  This is wee hilarious!.  So, spent a GOOD chunk of the day getting all the pieces in place.  Ready to hit reset when I discovered...my Veritas System Recovery 16 that contains all my backed up data is one month away from EOL and is no longer downloadable owing-as-to-how I didn't buy the ANNUAL maintenance "plan". (ANNUAL!)

AND...in trying to download 21 (the latest version) it seems to not work well for Desktop systems AND...uses different extensions - so that, even if I CAN get the program to finally run on a PC...there's no way to know if it is backwardly compatible.  Which would mean...should I reset the drive all my data would be locked away in the version 16 VSR files - for which I cannot download the app anymore.

So!  A wee dogleg is in my path now - I need an disk imaging app that I can use to run a full copy of the drive.

I considered just backing up the "Documents" folder, and the Office Templates directory but...there's years of work on the system now so...I'm just worried that if I don't have an image of the drive with an explorer feature - I'm sure to lose critical files that may be hither and yon around the file structure as I rebuild the system from the reset.

Veritas System Recovery is what Ghost became after Ghost itself was phased out.  It only has two features that I've ever used - can do FULL images of the drive and those images are themselves searchable.  So that, if I needed to restore ONLY C:\Users\user\Downloads\logic-issues-and-definitions.mp3 or even C:\Windows\System32\config\SOFTWARE I could drill down to that exact file alone and recover it even though the drive is a compressed full drive image.  (And, of course offer a way to reapply an image to roll back in history.)

Are there any FREE aps that create full disk images that also allow individual file restore feature?  So that I can run a full copy of the drive and have all the files on the drive searchable and individually recoverable once the reset is done.

LONG Friday here! :D  Plus, I was on the road to two different locations.  Just past midnight where I am now.  Back online after 6 or 7 hours to wheel in to the office to try to run the reset.

Sincerest thanks,

OT

Veeam Agent Backup
Hi Nobus & David!

Nobus - thanks for the link! :D

David - I'm just in my office now for the BIG Saturday ~ Sunday restore party! (What a GEEK I am! :D )

Wow!  Veeam looks POWERFUL!  I'll jump into the documentation now.  Wanted to ask you - have you used it?  And, if so, in your experience can it restore a SINGLE file from whatever image it creates?

Sincerely,

OT
Hi David,

W O W ! ! Veeam is the beeOMB!  Works JUST like Ghost / Veritas but... IT'S DOGGONE FREE! : DDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD!!!

Surprisingly it too just about an hour and a half to back up the whole 600 Gb drive.
User generated image
And then, the resulting file was just 400 Gb.  So, seems like there's some compression there.  Nice!
AND!  I was able to successfully recover INDIVIDUAL files! YAY!
Alright!  Looks like I'm all set to run the reset.  Will do that tomorrow.  Closing in on 7pm on my side of the world.  Will report results.
Thanks to ALL!

Sincerely,

OT
did you need to make an account?  i always wonder why they want that
Hi nobus,

Yeah - you're right!  I DID need to make an account.  And, it was MANDATORY and even detailed.  It actually gave me pause.

Then I Googled them a bit.  It seems they are a HUGE firm:
On January 9, 2020, Insight Partners announced that they would purchase Veeam in a $5 billion deal and move the company to the US.[16]

On 22 July 2020, It has been reported that Gartner, Inc. has placed Veeam Software in the 2020 Magic Quadrant for Data Center Backup and Recovery Solutions Leaders.[17]

In 2020, Veeam appointed Bill Largent, prior Chairman of the Board, as CEO and Chairman.[18]

Looking at the products they offer it seems mostly for network backups - multiple computers / servers.

And, the free tool allows ONLY one job.  If you try to create MORE than a single backup it drives you right to their sales page.

Plus, I couldn't even find a product they sold for less than five instances at a time.

My guess is that the free tool is a loss leader?  Used to FIRST win over skeptical purchasers and then convert them to multiple licenses?  Well, WOW!  They've won ME over!

Then, I started thinking about Veritas, and even Norton: as I recall they both have at LEAST my office number and certainly my email and payment info.  So, on balance...it seemed OK?

Thus, if you're thinking of doing it I'd say go for it! The tool IS powerful and user-friendly.  Like SO simple.  Even EASIER than Veritas / Ghost.

David!  Do you know if there's any more powerful version of the single station / personal backup?  Like I said, I only saw lots of "Buy for Corporate" types of tools.

AnnnnnnD!  I'm just about to run Veeam in advance of the BIG reset!  Please everyone cross your fingers.  I'll post once I have results.  Back online in a few hours.

Sincerely,

OT
And!  The plot THICKENS!  The recovery protocol only offers...Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 :D
Seems like I should choose 8.1.  Am I right?

And then, FURTHER update to 10 - which I recall was free.  Am I right?

User generated imageSincerely,

OT
i think that' normal -  it offers only factory reset options
probaly windows 10 was later installed
yes, select 8.1
then update to 10 if you wish...

That  is ACER recovery not VEEAM recovery.

Hi, All!

Interestingly, now that I've had this wee machine all stripped down for a few days as I gingerly try to piece it's far flung sections back together (don't get me STARTED! - how about a network driver that had the cabled connection constantly turning off! lol! )....  BUT, here's something that is KEY - check THIS out: https://community.spiceworks.com/topic/924462-turn-off-hard-disk-after-never-is-this-a-bad-idea

What I noticed in it's souped up state was that opening Explorer, I'd get the green molasses Working on it Bar ONLY when the 4tb external drive I use for backups was...ASLEEP!!!!
User generated image

Not sure if this is useful to anyone else.  But, keeping the drive awake always - especially since it is HUGE - meant the Explorer seems to load a LOT more quickly.  My wee contribution to YOUR good work!

Sincerely,

OT
if explorer must read the contents of huge drives - it can take some time; but if it gets exceedingly slow, it points usually to problems in that corner
