How to determine if I have correct network drivers for unbuntu

Hi

I am relatively new to Unbuntu 20.10. However, I’m wondering if I somehow may not have the best/correct drivers for my Ethernet and WiFi HW.

I am able to use ThunderBird and BlueMail to access multiple email accounts and send without issue. I can access YouTube and other websites as well.

However, when I try to do a software update, I get “failed to download repository “ check internet connection.  When I try to stream a video with VLC from my Western Digital MyBook, it fails, but if I copy the same file local, it works.  when I,
Audi speed-test, upload is as expected but ping is a very high 75ms & dwld is way slower than it should be.

sudo lshw does seem to have the WiFi & Nic correct as Realtek Semiconductor.

I am running Unbuntu on a Lenovo Ideapad 110-15IBR. Also, I’m running this installation of Unbuntu from 64gb USB drive instead of from the internal HD, which I’m running Windows 10.

Any information you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you very much

You asked, "I’m wondering if I somehow may not have the best/correct drivers for my Ethernet and WiFi HW."

As Dr. Klahn commented...

Linux != Windows

With Linux, you install a Distro, like Ubuntu FTS (5+ years of package updates) + all drivers... just work.

The only exception is if you're running some exotic installed card, like a Smart RAID controller for 128 disk, which spins up 1x disk at a time to reduce inductive spike at startup, which would requires massive amounts of non-residential wiring for boots to work. In this case, you'll almost surely have a vendor provided driver.

For all common hardware (chips on motherboards), Linux just works + since there's usually 1x driver (different from Windows) you already have the best... most correct driver...
Be aware...

Groovy (Ubuntu 20.10) != LTS

This means sometime shortly after 2021-07 the Groovy repositories will be deleted, so no more updates will be packaged.

Thus, some code, some where, in Groovy will become hackable after that date.

If you're planning on update to each new minor dot release, like Hippo - Ubuntu 21.04, then you'll install non-LTS versions.

On the other hand, if you're working on a money project (pays your bills + keeps your lights on), then you'll only install Ubuntu LTS versions.

Hi,

Note that you need to have a persistence file in order to keep any changes made to your USB installation. When you boot your live USB Ubuntu stick start a terminal and create a persistent installation on another USB stick:

$ sudo apt install mkusb
$ mkusb

Open in new window

Else all changes will be lost after you reboot.

Cheers
