Since you have 18.10, there should be an Update Manager/Software Updater app. Run it, check for updates and it will tell you if any upgrade is available.
As mentioned above the Ubuntu upgrade process is simple.

This suggests you've already tried this + hit some problem.

If you haven't tried, follow the above directions.

If you have tried + hit some problem, report the problem you hit.
Aside: You might consider upgrading to Ubuntu Focal instead (20.04.1) which will provide you with 5+ years updates.

Because Groovy (20.10) only has a few months of support till it hits EOL (End Of Life), then you must upgrade again.

Just depends on how frequently you like updating + how stable you like your code.

For most stable code + long time between required updates, stick with the latest Ubuntu LTS.

Hi thanks to all for the feedback,

When i run the software updater

I get the following message:

Software updates are no longer provided for Ubuntu 18.10.
To stay secure you should upgrade to Ubuntu 20.04.1 LTS

With an upgrade button.

But when I click it and wait nothing happens.

Also other times when I have run the "Software Updater"

I see check your internet connection.

Thanks,

Ward

Since both versions are EOL and not supported, the system won't let you upgrade.

But there is a workaround that worked for some people:
