How much heat can I expect a LM317 in TO-220 package dissipate ?
How much heat can I expect a LM317 in a TO-220 package dissipate ?
(w/ and/or w/o heat sink ?)
Below is the link to a Fairchild PDF on the specs, but I don't know calculate the heat ?
Is it just max current ? or do I need to figure the resistance the regulator will have at a particular input to output voltage and current and calculate is as: P=I2R ?
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks

Right now, I figure the device will be required to dissipate about 1/4 Watt, so there should not be a problem.
I have a component that required 3v, but all other components operate at 5v.
Thanks Again.
