Options for leader on a conference phone call

Conference phone call with John Doe making the call and linking all participants. Mary ask John a question and John thinks it's somewhat personal or sensitive. Can he put the others on hold so he can give Mary his answer? We are aware of a conference call where the leader of the call likes to hide things. They'd not want to be asked questions about certain topics and would likely want a way to reflect them back. Reflect is what they do on 1 on 1 phone calls, etc. And it is unbecoming and we don't want to see Mary (for example only) join the conference call if their fibs can be hidden from all those on the call except, say Mary. Thanks and all parties are on different brands of phone and cell carriers.

I'm not in the conference call voluntariry because the person who started the call is a man of the cloth and has patterns of behaviour common to controllers and puppeteers. I don't want them to ask me private life or personal life questions in front of the others on the call. I was asked to be on the call but declined due to the control personality of the leader of the call. They might put me or another on mute to share their opinions with others who are not on mute. So I avoid. I proposed an in person meeting of the callers and that was shot down.
