Local HP Printer on home laptop, does not appear in a Remoted Desktop Session list as a printer choice

On my home laptop, I am running Windows 10 Pro and have a usb connected HP Laserjet M148 printer.

After I connect via VPN to my office Server, I open a Remote Desktop Session to my office desktop computer.  The office desktop computer has a Ricoh copier (that is on the office network) as the default printer.

I open Microsoft Word on my office desktop computer, and edit a document

When I go to print the Word document, I see a list of printers, for example:  Ricoh Copier (redirected), but my HP Laserjet M148 printer (physcially connected to my home laptop) is not in the list.

How do I make my HP Laserjet M148 printer appear in the list of printers to choose from?

In the remote desktop connection properties, make sure 'Printers' is selected under 'Local devices and resources'

The Printers box is already checked in Local Resources.
i usually change the setting, reboot, and change it to what it needs to be - that often helps
Do you have the HP Universal Print Driver (HP UPD) installed on both machines?
If you see other HP printers in the list then it's already on your Work desktop just not your Home one
Recommend you use the PCL version rather than PostScript.

I went to this website to download the driver:
https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/hp-laserjet-pro-mfp-m148-m149-series/21996897

Under Driver-Product Installation Software (4)
I selected:  HP LaserjerPro  M148fdw Printer Full Solution Software
I selected it because it is the driver for Print, Scan, Copy and Fax.

If I use the Universal Print Driver as you suggest, will I still be able to Copy, Scan and Fax?

Locally, yes because the full driver is installed at home.  In your RDC scenario you will be able to print to the HP AIO at home from your work desktop while in the RDC session, but that's all.
As you really need to be physically present to copy, fax & scan you can use the full driver outside of the RDC session so that shouldn't be a big issue.

To make sure I understand,

Computer L is my laptop - which I have installed the HP LaserjerPro  M148fdw Printer "Full" Solution Software
Computer O is my office desktop computer located at work - which I need to install the HP universal printer driver

I use computer L to establish a VPN connection to my Server.
I use computer L to initialite a remote desktop session into computer O.

Which universal print driver do I install on computer O?  The blue box or the red box.  See image below.

which printer driver to install - HP LJ M148.jpg

Thank you for your help.

Question:  Do i have to physcially connect the HP AIO to computer O, or can I just install the HP universal printer driver software on computer O?

Note:  I am physically connecting the HP AIOprinter  to a Dell docking station via a USB cable to computer L (Laptop)

The installer is asking which mode:  See below.  Which one should I select?

Dynamic (unless you always want your home printer to appear to be always available on your Office desktop even when it's not - in which case Traditional)

Okay, I am installing dynamic.  I will test and get back to you by tomorrow (or sooner)

When I connect to my windows 10 remote computer.  I do see HP Laserjet M148 (redirected), and printed a test page successfully.

When I connect to my windows 7 remote computer.  I only see the HP Universal Printing PCL 6.  I see other printers, but not the HP Laserjet M148 (redirected).  Any clue to how to solve this?

This may be the difference between the RDC client and host versions, didn't realise you had different OS version involved in the issue.
In theory you should be able to install the same version of RDC on the Win 7 host but IIRC it breaks the licensing agreement.

Not to worry.  My Windows 10 office desktop is the primary computer I was concerned about, and it is working GREAT with your solution!

I will purchase and install Windows 10 Pro and install it on the Windows 7 computer.

Thanks for your help!
