restore data from a Server 2003 backup to a Server 2021 R2 server

We have been using a Server 2003 server to store and share files. We have a Windows 2012 server that we want to move that work to from the Windows 2003 server. I would normally just copy files over blocks at a time. But an unforeseen problem made our 2003 server unusable. Essentially you might say we just lost our hard drive. All we have are one or more recent backups. The problem is that I am not versed on restoring data from a 2003 server backup (to be moved) to a 2012 R2 server. I think the backup formats are quite different. One possible solution is to simply build/configure a server 2003 just to read in the backup file (from the old server 2003) then copy that restored data to the server 2012 R2. I am hoping there is a another solution to simply open the backup and just retrieve the data files we need. Thank you for any help in advance.

Another option might be to temporarily setup 2003 in a virtual environment, restore your backups and off-load to 2012

What were you using to backup??

Yes. Mr. Lee, we should have moved off of the server 2003 a decade ago. But this application was such a low priority. It was put on the back-burner. The saving grace was that we kept backing up our files.

The comments from Mr. Hayes, Mr. Lee, and Mr. kenfcamp were helpful. I thought Mr. Kenfcamp solution was a good touch.... just virtualize the server 2003. Anyway, the solution (relative to Mr. Hayes and Mr. Lee) was using a actual server 2003 to open the backup file. I found an old server 2003 that was long since un-used and stored away and simply powered it up. Usually we re-cycle our old servers with newer software. I am happy we accidently overlooked this server 2003. Thank all you gentlemen.
