Microsoft Word documents saved to the server take excess time to open

We have a remote site on our network that is having issues opening Word docs that are saved on their local file server as a shared network drive. It’s only Word 2016 documents that are affected and only docs saved on the network drive.  After some testing this is what we see:

  1. Save the same doc to the desktop it opens quickly.
  2. After saving to the desktop have a user save it back to the network drive and it takes about 30 seconds to open.
  3. Did some research on the web and had the user make a number of changes in Word and that didn’t help.

Since these were originally restored on a local server after a data breach, then moved to their local file share server, could it be that it or the drive is trying to reference something back on one of the main file servers at our main network before it opens on their local server?  Could it be an old SSID that is causing the issue also with a new AD environment?  Any ideas or experiences anyone has had similar would be greatly appreciated on what may be the issue.

Is there any reference to templates in the document?
You can take a copy, rename it to zip and extract some xml files to analyse.
