How do I count the characters in a file using Java

In a class assignment, we're being asked to count the characters in Java source code file, as well as those in a Java .class (bytecode) file. The solutions I have found online involve reading each line of the file into a String and then adding the value representing the length of that string to an accumulator. While that might work for a Java source code file, it won't work for the bytecode file. Besides, I'm really looking for something with which I can count each character individually. Is this possible?
