Win 10 Updates Keeps Trying to Install, Fails, Uninstalls, Disappears, Then Reappears Again

Hi,

Seeing this update for Win 10:

2021-03 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 20H2 for x64-based Systems (KB5000802)

Have tried to

Install and restart.

Install and shut down.

Each time the PC restarts. (Even in case 2)

Then, I see a message flash - a failure / couldn't install.

Then, as the restart occurs, it says "Undoing changes..."

Then, I'm back to ok.

After a few hours, I see the Update is back.

Only, the same process as above occurs.

Can't get the update to stick.  And, it keep[s reappearing.

What do you think is happening?

Sincerely,

OT

Try the full download from:

https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Home.aspx

Search for the Cumulative Update  matching your Windows 10 version and install the MSU by double-clicking it.

Hello There

Stop the Windows Update service, delete C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution, download the update from here: https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=KB5000802, start the Windows Update service and install it manually.
start by disconnecting all external devices -then try again
was the pc working ok before the update ? any error message? -- look also in event viewer for errors
or post the dmp file  : windows \minidumps
you can also run sfc /scannow from an elevated prompt
Are you updating a single PC that's not connected to a business network? Or are you on a business network where someone else might be managing updates as well as you being able to install them yourself?

That update has some issues with regard to certain printer drivers, causing BODs/spontaneous restart on workstations when you try to print.  If your updates are being managed by a sysadmin, it's possible they have put a policy in place to prevent installation and/or remove it if it's installed.

Hi All!

Wow!  Great, detailed info.

Hello there, you wrote:
delete the C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution.

Delete is safe?  Rename?  Must delete?
<worry>

Sincerely,

OT
Hi All, again! :D
I can see TWO Win 10 updates that match what the system itself was looking for - Windows 10 Version 20H2 for x64-based Systems: GDR-DU and version 1903 or later
User generated image
Which one should I select, and what's the difference?

Sincerely,

OT
Delete is safe?  Rename?  Must delete?
No, you don't have to. You can delete it or rename it.
Hi Hello There,

Want to be sure I've got it.  Sounds like you're saying the file DOES need to be EITHER renamed or deleted?  So that, in some way it has been neutralized in terms of the overall OS.

Put another way, it must be officially missing from the system either by re-name or deletion in order for the execute to go correctly.

Am I right?

Sincerely,

OT
Well, the system must forget the content of the SoftwareDistribution folder. You can achieve it by renaming this folder or deleting this folder. It's safe to delete it. Also, this folder and the content will be automatically recreated.
any comments to my post?
hi hello there & nobus!

HT
Ah!  OK.  Yep.  Got it.

nobus
START BY DISCONNECTING ALL EXTERNAL DEVICES -THEN TRY AGAIN
Tried.  Same result.

WAS THE PC WORKING OK BEFORE THE UPDATE ?
Yes.

ANY ERROR MESSAGE?
No.

-- LOOK ALSO IN EVENT VIEWER FOR ERRORS

I'm guessing the kernel power was me letting the battery die. :D  Anything eles look troublesome?

YOU CAN ALSO RUN SFC /SCANNOW FROM AN ELEVATED PROMPT
Let me try HT's solution and I'll post back.

Sincerely,

OT
Hi, All!

Tried Hello There's suggestion.

Was able to download.

C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution  recreated itself.

Installed:

But...same PC behavior.  Got to 7% of "Updating.  Don't turn of your PC."
Then, restarted.  Twice.
At second restart, it said
"Couldn't complete.  Undoing changes."

And, back to "normal?".

What do you think is happening?

Sincerely,

OT

from event viewer, you seem to have got 121 errors the last week - that seems too many
if sfc does not fix it, you still can try Dism to repair system files -  otherwise i'd say : Backup and fresh install
Hi nobus,

Oh, gosh.  Really? <cries>  Just went through a full install two months ago.  https://www.experts-exchange.com/questions/29204084/Help-Me-Save-Big-Bucks-D.html

What do you think is happening?

How long will sfc and Dism take on a 1TB drive

1) Try https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/windows-update-troubleshooter-for-windows-10-19bc41ca-ad72-ae67-af3c-89ce169755dd

2) Have a look at %systemroot%\Logs\CBS\CBS.log or attach it here

3) Generate the WindowsUpdate.log: Open Powershell and run  Get-WindowsUpdateLog. It will create the log on your desktop.

4) Open an elevated command prompt and run;

dism /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

sfc /scannow
>>  How long will sfc and Dism take on a 1TB drive   <<  that depends on the pc model, cpu type, installed ram, and disk model
if you have an SSD and 8 GB ram on a normal running pc, my guess would be about 1/2 Hr to 1 Hr
But  " Just went through a full install two months ago.  "  makes me think you have other problems
ands when looking into the Q i noticed you did NOT say what exactly you did : a factory reset of win 8.1 ? + updates?
did you check that all drivers were updated too + bios?
no errors in device manager ?
Hi,

Michael.  Ran the troubleshooter.  Here's what I got:

nobus, you asked:
 A FACTORY RESET OF WIN 8.1 ? + UPDATES?
Yes.
DID YOU CHECK THAT ALL DRIVERS WERE UPDATED TOO + BIOS?
Fairly certain, yes.
NO ERRORS IN DEVICE MANAGER ?
Didn't check at that time.

Just about to restart from Troublshooter.  Will post results.

Sincerely,

OT
I wonder what BITS could do to the installation. Maybe the wrong track.
Hi,

Same results.  Running dism now.

Here is an update history:

Did you try the stand-alone update?

Next we'd need to look at CBS.LOG and WindowsUpdate.log
Hi Michael,

Searched the logs.  Here's what I found: CBS log no errors.  WindowsUpdate Log, several.  Posted below:

Can't figure out what's happening, as, if you look here, you can see that updates were going ahead smoothly for a while:

1) Did you try the stand-alone update?
2) This is an unmanaged PC so its not in a corporate environment, correct?
3) Is there a firewall or proxy in between?
4) What antivirus software is installed?
0x80070003 - you already tried the fixes for this kind of problems like deleting the SoftwareUpdate folder.

Regarding "freezing up":  Does that mean you have to "hard reset" the computer by powering off/on or pressing the reset button?

if the pc keeps freezing after a re-install , you have a hardware problem- usually motherboard related -and you must fix that, otherwise it will keep biting you
did you check the cpu and disk temperatures?

if you want more help on this, start posting the pc and disk model, installed ram free space etc..

How does all this look?  By and large the PC is about 10 times faster than before the re-install.  But, suddenly ( like last few days) freezing?

Michael - what do you think all those Transient errors are?

Sincerely,

OT

the figures are very good - no problem there
then i would inspect event viewer for errors and warnings
make a note of the interval when the freeze happens
Hi Nobus,

Will do!

KEY thing now is...how can I get the update to stick? :P :D

Sincerely,

OT
it seems i was not clear enough, so i'll repeat  :  if the pc keeps freezing after a re-install , you have a hardware problem-  -and you must fix that, first. HOW OFTEN DOES IT FREEZE?  if it is after days, difficult to find
usually i find the cause by eliminination - so make a list of the things you tried
i suggest to disconnect all devices not needed for testing : remove cd drive, - extra disk drives, disconnect all external devices, etc....
i always start by testing ram and disk; you can start ram diag by running from 1 ram stick till freeze -up, then test the other, (if the freeze is frequent, say within the hour, you can run memtest86+
another way is to run from a live cd, like ubuntu : https://ubuntu.com/tutorials/try-ubuntu-before-you-install#1-getting-started   UBUNTU live
that often gives you other info on the problem
Hi nobus,

I need to revise that freeze statement, even to strike it. :D

I'm feeling frustrated and sad that I can't the Update to get installed, and I'm going on day six of trying.

Really hoping we can get it figured out.

One or two garden variety freezes may have become magnified in my mind owing to the amount of wrangling I've been doing on this update.

Need to find a way.

Sincerely,

OT
I'd use one of the methods to reset / remove the BITS jobs:

https://msendpointmgr.com/2014/03/28/how-to-reset-bits-transfer-queue/
Hi Michael,

Author at that link suggests:
@echo off net stop BITS ipconfig /flushdns ren "%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Application Data\Microsoft\Network\Downloader\qmgr0.dat" qmgr0.dat.old ren "%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Application Data\Microsoft\Network\Downloader\qmgr1.dat" qmgr1.dat.old net start BITS

and
I saved the above batch script to a .bat file and ran it from an elevated command prompt.

How do I do that?

And then:
I then checked the BITS transfer queue again by running:
Get-BitsTransfer -AllUsers

When he says "run", how do I run this?

Sincerely,

OT
Open an elevated command prompt and run each command manually:

net stop BITS
ipconfig /flushdns
ren "%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Application Data\Microsoft\Network\Downloader\qmgr0.dat" qmgr0.dat.old
ren "%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Application Data\Microsoft\Network\Downloader\qmgr1.dat" qmgr1.dat.old
net start BITS

bitsadmin /list /allusers

Get-BitsTransfer -AllUsers is a PowerShell command, it lists the same information as bitsadmin /list /allusers
after trying a couple of fixes, i usually backup and do a fresh install - it saves me time, and i'm sure i have a good OS
don't forget to update drivers!
Hi Michael,

Got through first two commands OK until I hit an error at the third:

After stopping BITS just run
ren C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Network\Downloader\qmgr*.dat *.dat.old

Then start BITS.

The TRANSIENT_ERRORs should be gone. Check with bitsadmin /list /allusers like above.
Hi Michael,

HTH
Hi Michael,

Got it all to run.  But, still the same result.  Backup installs to 7%, restarts twice, second restart is the "Undoing" message.

One curious thing: when I ran the commands to backup the files, it was 11:55pm, m time.

BUT...both backupfiles were created with the timestamp 11:17pm

Not sure if that's significant.

Transient errors are gone, but, Backup still undoes itself as before.

Strange filetime: Executed at 11:55pm but shows 11:17

What do you think?  What can we try next?

Finally, back in January, when I did the re-install, once I had it done, I made a backup.

So, I have a basic factory restore image of the drive.

Really don't want to use it though, only because It will mean moving al my files back to the restore.  AND...since there's been four windows updates since then, I'll still need to go through all the stations of update - which may only bring me...right back to where I am!

HOPING to somehow get it fixed with the current system.  But, wanted to mention that I have this "restore" image.

Sincerely,

OT

Running out of ideas..
If you post a WindowsUpdate.log,  best from the time stamp you started the manual installation until it came back from rollback. Maybe we can see something here.
Also post/check cbs.log same time range.
as i said :  after trying a couple of fixes, i usually backup and do a fresh install - it saves me time, and i'm sure i have a good OS - and don't forget to update drivers!
Hi Michael,

Will do.
nobus - almost there.  Several questions:

About driver updating - it never seems to amount to anything?  I mean - the system always says: "We have the best driver.  Don't bother."  Is there any tool OUTSIDE of the OS that can ensure that the drivers ARE being updated.

And, then, isn't it true that...there's really no end to the number of things that have drivers?  When you say drivers, what are the MAIN ones you mean?

Finally, I'm just worried that if I give awhole weekend over to this task [NO!], won't I be right back in the same place?  I mean, is the cause of the issue only going to resurface again?  Or, is this more likely just corrupted software?  When I read your comments it seems you've faced similar issues.  So, does a reinstall in this situation usually WORK? Or, only just get you back to the same point? :(...

ALSO!  To you both, Good Friends - what did you think of the time stamp anomaly?

ADDITIONALLY! :D  WHAt about theimage I have of right-after restore?  Would you roll back to this one?  HEre's what I mean: the Factory Restore is... Windows 7 (or 8).  I had to go back to that, upgrade to 10.

So, the image I have is the moment just AFTER I got to Win 10.

What would you do?  Go back to this image, and avoid the

Win 8 Factory > Win 10 Upgrade

Or, DO the Win 8 > 10 just to be all clear?

Sincerely,

OT

Hi nobus,

Got it.  GREAT link! :)))

Hi Michael,

Thanks!

If there is a BIOS update I'd do that one first
I'm confused.  Wont fresh install undo that?

And... how can I tell if there's a BIOS update pending?

Sincerely,

OT
updating all 14 drivers takes between 1/2 hour and a couple hours, not a weekend
yes - i have had several problems with several pc's, and after trying a couple of fixes, a fresh install always gets me going - but you MUST update your drivers then also

No, a BIOS update won't be undone by a fresh install.

Run msinfo32 and look at BIOS version/date. Compare this with the version for your model available on the Acer homepage.
Usually manufacturers provide a Windows based upgrade tool. Follow the manufacturers instructions.

Didn't find an Acer E5-572, just Acer E5-572G on Acer support page. Could be identical.
Its better to look via the support page seaching  your serial number. A wrong BIOS could damage your system (usually manufacturers prevent you from flashing the wrong BIOS, but who knows).
Hi nobus & Michael!!!!!!!!!!!

<bowing> "I am not worthy. I am not worthy!"

nobus - I'm a little unclear.  Last time I did a factory reset, working from the image installed on the PC.  You wrote:

I've never done that before.  Can you give a quick bullet points list of the steps of reinstalling from the media creation tool, or share a link for one that you think is comprehensive?

Michael - Ah!  E572-G is what I have.  Do you recall the BIOS you saw there?  Please can you share the link?  Here's what I have from msinfo32:

All drivers and BIOS: https://www.acer.com/ac/en/US/content/support-product/6201?b=1

New BOIS: 2016/05/24 Version:1.08 (Currently 1.00)
media creation tool :  Download Windows 10 (microsoft.com)
just follow the steps

on my link, there is a bios 1.09
Hi nobus and Michael,

Reinstall via Media Creation Tool first?  Or, update BIOS first?

nobus - there seem to be 5 kinds of BIOS offered.  Do I need to upgrade through them all in sequence?  Or, which single one shour I use?

Also, what is the 6th item below: Quick Access?  And, would youinstall it?
User generated image
Sincerely,

OT

I recommend flash latest BIOS only (1.09).
Quick Access is an optional software to adjust some settings without entering the BIOS.
i would never install quick access - it hinders  me on my pc
and yes - apply the latest bios - - and be sure you have a good power  connection
chances are you don't need the bios upgrade, but to be sure, you would need to contact Acer
Reinstall Win 10 first, or update bios first? :)

Sincerely,

OT
that's a 50/50 choice
first win 10 - if it needs bios - you have to redo it
bios first - ( not accounting it fails = a bricked mobo) - it should be ok
All done. All drivers updated. Same results....Win Update error: 0x80070643.

Happened at .NET Framework download which was Auto initiated by some piece of software.  And, also for security intelligence update from Microsoft defender antivirus - kb2267602.

right now I'm using my phone to post this message.

what's next?
yep. I ran the troubleshooter. it claimed to have found some errors, and fix them. ispostback, waasmedicsevice and BITS. Now, I'm right back to where I was 10 days ago. kb50008002 downloads, tries to install, goes to 7%, restarts, restarts again with the failure message. and, kb2267602 is now a newly failed update. with the error message 0x80070643.

so, an increase in sustained errors of one.

What can we do?
posting from my phone, so I can't upload an image.

if you Google search

SeanDavidSchppler-0356 and the kb numbers, you'll find a long thread on docs.microsoft.com describing the exact same situation. right down to the percentages: 7%
got it fixed! still posting from my phone. will post an update later.
Hi,

This is what I did: https://howtofixwindows.com/upgrade-windows-10-using-media-creation-tool/

From this point:

Upgrade Windows 10 version 20H2 using Media creation tool
If Checking for windows updates still do not show the October 2020 Update being available, Then Let’s windows force upgrade and install windows 10 version 20H2 using the official windows media creation tool.

Thanks for all the guidance!  Your detailed answers helped me make sure-footed steps.

Sincerely,

OT
