Beyond Copland Icons

Hi,

Sure...Copland icons are old school.  Too old school.  But, on a Windows system...SURELY there's got to be better looking icons?!

Among FREE icon sets...what's a great looking set of icons that will save me from the soul-crushing manila folder images?

Sincerely,

OT

Hi OT,
These are my go-to sites for free icons (in order of preference):

https://iconarchive.com/
https://iconfinder.com/
https://icons-for-free.com/

In terms of specific free icon sets, these are my two favs:

https://iconarchive.com/show/fs-icons-by-franksouza183.3.html
https://iconarchive.com/show/oxygen-icons-by-oxygen-icons.org.html

Also, I often make icons from a PNG at this free site:
https://icoconvert.com/

Hi Joe,

Wow!  Those look great!!!

About these - https://iconarchive.com/show/oxygen-icons-by-oxygen-icons.org.html  -

What is the best download link for them?  Any, any location that has them all as

.ico

Or!  Any way to bulk process them all as?

Sincerely,

OT

If you want something more modern looking, fontawsome is widely used for web apps, but you can also download svg's https://fontawesome.com/how-to-use/on-the-desktop/setup/getting-started

They are solid colors although if you are only using a small set of these, you could create your own multi tone and of course easily create single colors in any image software.
This is the best money I have ever spent. I cannot not tell you how many times these folks have saved my bacon. I learn so much from the contributors.

Important: I checked the Terms of Service here:

If you read the terms a little closer, you will see they are saying the site points to third party sites and when you are downloading,it is from those sites that you would want to abide by the terms as far as what you are doing with using something like httrack to download electronically.

In the case of the Oxygen icons, those link back to github and so you would be bound by their terms for accessing outside of the normal channels. In addition, you would want to check the license for each of those.  The Oxygen icons are LPGL https://techbase.kde.org/Projects/Oxygen/Licensing. Other icons on the iconarchive site are not conducive to private or commercial projects.

Excellent point!

> In the case of the Oxygen icons, those link back to github

As far as I can tell, they do not. In fact, my first thought (quite a while ago) was to download them from GitHub, but the only files that I could find at GitHub were the PNGs, not the ICOs. As I noted, that was a while ago when I first tried to download them, so maybe it has changed since then, but the only GitHub site that I found back then was this:
https://github.com/pasnox/oxygen-icons-png

I may have missed the ICO files there, but all I found back then were the PNG files (in a tar.zst file).

Correct. Whenever I use IconArchive, I make sure that I have the "Commercial free" License drop-down selected:

IconArchive commercial free
Of course, I could have pointed-and-clicked 755 times to get those same files downloaded, so complying with the license terms of each icon is crucial (which is why I always select "Commercial free"). What I was really worried about is the site prohibiting "web scraping" or any form of scripting/automation (as EE does, unless you have written permission). As far as I can tell from the IconArchive Terms of Service, they have no such prohibition. Regards, Joe
