What is "pass-through authentication?"

I am reading up on Azure Security and I came upon the following words: pass-through authentication.

Below is what I found so far for a meaning: "Azure Active Directory (Azure AD) Pass-through Authentication allows your users to sign in to both on-premises and cloud-based applications using the same passwords."

From: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/active-directory/hybrid/how-to-connect-pta

Does "pass-through authentication" have a different meaning than what I found from above?

I am referring to pass-through authentication,
taken from the context of: "

Synchronize directories with Azure AD Connect" From https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/learn/modules/azure-well-architected-security/3-identity-management
