The error message usually is connecte with errors according windows update. But the message looks more than a possible hard-disc issue. Thetranslated error is
ERROR_DEVICE_NOT_AVAILABLE

Did this machine ran before in a HyperV environment?

#1 how did you create this VM?
Must be a Gen 1 vm, maybe requires legacy networking

Unfortunately I didn't create this VM, it's an inherited issue.
Best I can tell the system was running the VM on Windows 7 and croaked after updating to Windows 10.

Lets say, I can imagine that it doesn't work anymore. This was something like a brigde solution at the beginning od Windows 7. Do you need it or your are just curious about`?

Need it to run a legacy application
David Johnson, CD

That was with virtual PC and it was part of the licensing for Windows 7 Pro/Ultimate/Enterprise
It was NEVER hyper-V  and no it will not work under hyper-v and is not licensed for usage under Windows 10

Then you need a Windows 7 machine or buy a copy of windows XP and install it into Hyper-V

My assumption now is that the update from Win 7 to Win 10 broke the existing HYperV XP VM. So the solution would be to create a new XP VM in Windows 10?

Now in process of creating a fresh new virtual XP system. Looks like it may work.

This why is asked if you need the content, not a problem at all to create any version of windows as a virtual machine.
Even you can possibly just use the old harddisc. But depends on how you create the new one.
