The the 2.4GHz and 5GHz radios have different SSIDs (names)? &nbsp;If they are different and your computer sees the 5GHz one, that indicates that your computer's WiFi does support 5GHz. &nbsp;If they are different and your computer doesn't see the 5GHz signal, then it very likely doesn't support it. &nbsp;Providing the model number of your computer would be helpful here.<br><br>I would agree with Kimputer that updating the drivers would be a good starting point.

Sorry guys........... The laptop in question is an Alienware 13 model P56G<br><br>The new router has both 2.4 and 5.0<br><br>My iphone will use either......... but the laptop only shows the 2.4 as being available.<br><br>I am guessing I need to replace the WIFI module to a more modern one - if that is possible.<br><br>But some have suggested new drivers. Depends what Alienware did Did they solder the card? Did they put the card on the other side of the motherboard?<br>Try to locate the antenna's first, they should be thin cables coming from BOTH sides of the LCD panel.<br>Trace it to the motherboard. It will be coming together on a small card (about half or quarter size of an SODIMM, which you seem to have already found).<br>If it's clearly slotted with a screw on top, you can probably replace it yourself. Let us know exactly what it is so we can suggest a replacement for you. Either supply us ALL the numberings you see (all chip or sticker names/types/model/version).<br>If you can't find it (because the 2 cables disappear to the other side), it depends if you're confident enough to fully disassemble the motherboard from the casing. Then better let a pro do it.<br>If you can't find a lose card and the cables are on the motherboard itself, or the card has been integrated (with epoxy) on the motherboard, you have to buy a USB solution.

Which channel at 5GHz is the router using? Set it manually to ch.36 and set channel-width to 20MHz then see what happens.

The computer is about 7 years old (at least in terms of design). &nbsp;As has been suggested, update the drivers, and look for a firmware update as well. &nbsp;These are things that should be updated, but often aren't. &nbsp;It's also possible that the chipset used by your laptop has an incompatibility with the chipset used by the router. &nbsp;(I had one laptop that absolutely refused to connect to an Asus router - never had problem with any other device, but the laptop's built in wireless just would not connect). &nbsp;I bought USB wireless adapter and that worked fine.<br><br>Googling "Alienware 13 5GHz" found some interesting information - Certain Dell computers (of which, Alienware is one), had problems with the Dell drivers. &nbsp;There was a recommendation to REMOVE the wireless in Device manager and let Windows redetect and re-install the drivers. &nbsp;However, updating the drivers as previously mentioned may also work.<br><br>If, ultimately, it cannot be solved with driver updates, I would recommend buying the third party adapters (you'd probably get better performance anyway). &nbsp;Here's a list of some of the supposedly better options:<br><a href="https://www.pcgamer.com/best-usb-wi-fi-adapter/" rel="ugc">https://www.pcgamer.com/best-usb-wi-fi-adapter/</a>

HELP WITH NEW ROUTER - MY COMPUTER DOESN'T LIKE THE 5G (ONLY THR 2.4)
