asked on

Convert AVI file for OBS

I have After Effects projects that produce what I want to see... but as AVI files... which are huge.

I would prefer Animated GIF.

I installed GifGun... but it wont remove the black background.

Any suggestions?

Animated GIF is not a good choice for video.  It is limited to a fixed palette of 255 colors, which is poor color rendition compared to the current standard -- 24-bit video, 16 million colors.

The fixed palette also means that the bigger the frame gets, the worse it looks.  What is "acceptable" at 320x240 often looks bad at 400x300 and wretchedly bad at 640x480.

For web use, stick with AVI using a Microsoft standard codec.  Anything other than a Microsoft standard codec is a crap-shoot as to whether the user's browser will be able to display it.  HTML 5 should eliminate some of these issues, but it's not widely deployed yet.
I would use a h2.64 MP4 codec by running the avi through handbrake (https://handbrake.fr)

I Assume you are talking about very small clips, and not a full movie that you need to export to an animated gif.

I installed GifGun... but it wont remove the black background.

Are you sure you exported to AVI with a transparent background? as I do not think that it is possible for an AVI file to have an Alpha channel.

Export an AVI
  • Select the sequence.
  • Choose File > Export > Media.
  • In the Export Settings dialog box, choose Microsoft AVI or QuickTime from the Format menu.
  • On the Video tab, choose PNG, None, or Animation from the Video Codec menu, and choose 32 from the Depth menu.
  • Set other settings and click Export or Queue to export as you normally would.

That will give you a png sequence of images with transparent background (alpha channel), which should work fine for an animated gif.
