How do I mount a file server (NAS) remotely as a drive on my Macbook?

I have a Synology NAS at home where I'd like to store data to remotely and securely access from the cloud when I'm away from home. I don't want to use port forwarding because I've already had a couple of attacks on my network and don't trust that it won't happened again. I use a program called Expandrive to mount cloud store as drives on my machine because the software does not take up space on my HDD. It would be great to use Expandrive to access my NAS remotely but I'm puzzled about how to make that happen.
