If you want to reinstate the classic Windows Photo Viewer in Server 2016, you can choose "Windows Photo Viewer" as the default application for pictures file extensions.

More information, please read this post:

By default, Windows Server 2016 doesn't have any photo viewer app installed and you can open these files with mspaint only. If this doesn't fit your needs, you have to install another app or use the above.

Easiest way is to map or copy the file to your local station, and open the file from there. Best not to install unnecessary apps onto the server, to reduce the unnecessary waste of resources.

I agree with Ronald it is best to do this from a remote machine however if you really need the ability you can either install a viewer or just add the registry keys for the Microsoft photo viewer as the exe is already there it just does not have the registry keys.

You can use the following registry file to make windows photo viewer work on 2016.
Create a new text file paste the contents of this into it. Rename the file with .reg extension and double click on it.
Once you import the keys to the registry you can then choose open with and select the photo viewer.

Hi Baswaraj,

How to open pictures (.jpg, .png, .bmp) in windows 2016 Server. By default it opens through MSPAINT

I've installed Irfanview viewer to a few servers with no issues. It only has a tiny footprint, uses hardly any resources and has never interfered with anything. Nothing runs in the background except when it is activated by viewing a graphics file.

A bonus is that it has the capability to view considerably more formats than Microsoft's Photo Viewer and also allows for many ways to manipulate photos being viewed. It's also free. A truly excellent program I can highly recommend.

Hope that's helpful.

Regards, Andrew

Hello All , Thanks for your responses . It gives me insights.
I will be preferring this document https://smarthomepursuits.com/enable-photo-viewer-on-server-2016-or-2019/
I hope mentioned registry changes will not popup something different.
