Shrinking large graphics files

I have a *.png file that is sharp but fairly large. I want to shrink it down to use as a favicon and other web graphics. when I do that it gets fuzzy. I use Gimp. what is the best way to shrink it and keep it "sharp."

If you are on Linux, you can use optipng or trimage, Both can be installed using apt-get. optipng is a command-line tool. trimage is GUI.

This is near impossible, as most favicon files are small, so as you compress by 99%+ resolution drops to... unreadable...

Best to create a favicon from scratch, rather than crushing an image.
