Website product page content writer.... Whom do you hire?

Hello Experts,

We have a client that asked a good question, he has a technical product that is used by IT professionals, he asked, whom should he hire to rewrite the content of his product page professionally?  A marketer, an english writer, a sales guy, a technical writer...etc.

He wants the person to be able to take the content and make it a magnet for the writer but also easy to understand. He is talking about the main product page of the website.

Who would you hire in such case? what skill set do they require? Is there a name for their job?

Hi,

It will required a technical writer for all documentation.

The person should know very well the product or if not this person will need the help of the person / team who created the product.

The technical documentation usually explain how to use the product, API documentation, minimum requirement, installation, SOP, FAQ, knowns issues to the end user or IT / Dev person.

The technical writer will need the help of the sales department for the marketing part.
So for flyer, web documentation, PDF that will help the sales department to sell the product.
The technical writer will  recap in easy words the product description for the person who will purchase the product.

So this is depending who read the doc and why.
Most of the time this is be an existing employee who will write the documention as it would take time to a new employee to know the product enough to write the documentation.

You can engage the content writer. Here are the choice from one of the famous outsourcing site called Fiverr site: https://www.fiverr.com/categories/writing-translation/website-content

You can read their profile and reviews before you hire those can proceed with long term services.

If you want to engage with more professional content writer, you can use freelancer.com to hire them based on your more custom requirements.

Kudos to your client for recognizing they need to hire somebody to write content. I find this is something most do not put enough value in and try and do it on their own to only never get it done or it is really not good content.

Generally, somebody that is a professional copy writer will be able to do this for you. They don't necessarily  have to be technical or a specialist in that field, especially if you have the technical part already written.

The other aspect to this is SEO and I assume that is what you mean by a magnet.

One of the Experts here is a very good writer and worth a mention. Andrew Leniart is the chief volunteer editor for the articles and videos on this site. https://www.experts-exchange.com/members/kzx10.html

Thank you both.  So a technical write may not have a marketing appeal in their writing but they can understand the product.

A content writer might be good but if they are not technical is my fear?

I am hoping for someone technical with a marketing spin to attract sales.  right?
A content writer might be good but if they are not technical is my fear?

A good content writer will be able to take on almost any subject.  I would expect them to not only do some research on the product but also for SEO as well as understand the intended audience.

To my opinion the writer must know the product or the subject at minimum to write effective documentation.
I'm a technical writer myself and honestly I could not write much on a subject that I don't know.
I could, but it would require to do some research, to use the product or service for a while to understand it (depending on the case and complexity).

The person who developed the product or the service is usually the best person to write the documentation and is the best guide. So this person can write all the bullet points list and a marketing writer could add the wow effect and call to action and the technical write can take everything and make the documentation.

If you hire a new employee, I would do it for the long term.
The person will need the time to get familiar with the product, so this may take a while.
The good thing is that you will have a writer in place that will evolve with the company and maintain the existing documentation and create new.
