asked on

how to make my ipad "ring" to find it

My grand daughters have a habit of leaving my ipad around our house after playing with it.  Sometimes it is very hard to find.

Is there an application I can install that will let me make it chirp or ring or similar remotely (ideally via a web site) so that I can more easily find it.  It's sort of like losing your remote in your house.  The apps that help find it in the big wild aren't what I'm looking for.  I need something audio as I described.

Same thing for my wife's iPhone, but at least I can call that.

You do not need to install any app to locate the iPad. There is a built-in app called Find My app. Just sign in iCloud with the same Apple ID for your iPhone and turn on "Find My" setting in your iPad and you can make the iPad ring from your iPhone.

Or you can sign in your iCloud.com from a web browser in a computer and goto https://www.icloud.com/find and select your iPad and click "Play Sound" button to remotely play a sound in your iPad.

However, you need to trust the browser if you do not want 2FA every time you do the login.

Of course, the iPad will not ring if it is not connected to the Internet or has automatically powered off from low battery.

If you cannot make sure that your iPad will be charged up from time to time or always connected to the Internet, you might need to purchase an AirTag and attach the AirTag to the iPad.

Android has similar APP, you can find in Google APP store...
But according to your question, it would be simpler just to call your own phone number.
The functionality of such APPs is to geo-locate the device (what is too unspecific inside a building), to lock the device or even to let it ring. Calling the number does the same.

I even do it with my handy, when I have left it somewhere I could not remember.

But no such apps will work to find an iPad or iPhone.

Calling the number does the same.

It is the same if the device has not been muted and you need to call the number of an iPhone which has set up iPhone Cellular Call and the iPad has been signed on with the same Apple ID of the iPhone.

Play sound feature of Find My app is unique as your iPad will make a sound no matter it is muted / set to vibrate or not.

@Jackie,
you are right of couse, overseen the iPad in the question ;-)
If you try using Find My iPad or iPad and iPhone and are not having much success I suggest you invest in Bluetooth tag.

They work really well around your house and even if the iPad is powered off or out of charge it will still work.

There are tags by samsung, apple, tile and others that work
https://www.digitaltrends.com/mobile/best-bluetooth-trackers/

Simply stick one to the case or back of the iPad and if its ever lost you can use an app on any other phone or device to make it ring LOUDLY.  Sometime old-school bluetooth technology is simpler and more reliable ;-)

This is not ideal (an app that is available on both iOS and Android would be perfect), but it does work so I'll need to go with it.  Unfortunately, whatever the application would be would have to be running on any misplaced device and checking for the need to "beep" and in the Apple world that's almost certainly limited to something Apple would do.

Same issue for apps that track your car in big parking lots or tile devices.  These won't/can't auto run in the background all the time and thus limiting their benefit.  It's somewhat possible to have background apps in Android, but far more difficult (or impossible) to do so in iOS.  Going to the web site isn't that bad.

Just FYI - the TILE and these other Bluetooth trackers such as the new Apple AirTag  do/can autorun in the background ALL THE TIME.  That is the whole raison d'etre for them to exist .. they are low energy bluetooth devices which are constantly broadcasting and listening.  You cannot turn them off and on some tags you can replace the battery and on others you cannot but they can last for well over a year or more on a small battery.  When you lose or misplace the item which has the TILE/AirTag on it .. you open the app on any other mobile device and set it to "seek" the tag .. and when you get within 10-15m the tag will emit a sound.  It’s a LOT simpler than opening iCloud on an Android phone and will work whether the iPad is on or off/ charged or not.
