WordPress & PHP Plugin: What are the minimum steps to update the source file?

I am new to WP and PHP and at the moment, am making a new PHP plugin. I am doing the coding on my Mac Desktop, so when I want to test an update, I do the following...

1) Save the PHP changes
2) Create a Zip file
3) Visit my WP Admin panel to Disable, Delete and re-Add the plug-in.

Is this too many steps?

Also, when I start to make source changes using SSH, on the server, what are the minimum steps to do follow, when I update the PHP for my plug-in?

Thanks

So, if I edit the PHP file for an installed plug-in, those updates to not require the plug-in be reloaded?

David, how do I test the PHP plug-in functionality without it yet being a plugin? I look for a certain Page ID, and it needs to be able to make a database connection.
