How many USB devices can I use with a powered USB hub?

I have multiple USB devices, but have run out of USB ports on my computer.   If I buy a powered hub, how many devices can I connect?

Usually as many as the hub has ports. But it will also depend on how much power each of your devices requires, and how high the wattage is of the Power-Supply connected to the Hub. Further it might be unlikely that all the devices have the same degree of access at the same time, so that might reduce the overall current used...

I guess I should use one 4-port hub plugged into each of the USB ports, rather than one 16-port hub plugged into one USB port.   I do not have external hard drives plugged into USB hubs.
Exactly how many ports do you need? There are 10 to 16 port hubs out there:

Or 8 port:

If you need more USB ports and the computer in question is not a laptop, then perhaps another solution is a 4-port or 8-port USB add-in PCI / PCIe card.  They are not expensive.
