When we use on-prem SharePoint, we use SSRS for custom reports based on SP lists. For SharePoint On-line (O365), what options are there for custom reporting?

Not quite sure which kind of report you create out of SharePoint List... I would in general just use views to create them. But any tool which is capable to use the SharePoint Web Services / OData may be an option. Power BI as Cliff said is one of them.
