Internet Shortcuts Does Not Open Webpage

I noticed the past 2 days that when I go a saved internet shortcuts in any of my folders on the desktop and I click on the link it opens as an internet url then after highlighting it then it opens as a webpage. I tried everything in my Brave settings and File Explorer and nothing seems to work. Can you please help me? The problem happens with both Brave and MS Edge on all of my previously saved shortcuts.

Thank you.

Right-click on one of the shortcuts, left-click on Properties and then paste what you have for the URL on the Web Document page.  That may hold the answer

CompProbSolv,
There is nothing to paste in the webpage document as you had stated. See screen capture.

Thank you,

This is how I create shortcuts to web pages
Browse to the page in your browser
Copy the URL from the address bar
In File Explorer, open the folder where you want the shortcut to reside
Right-click an empty area of the folder
Left-click on New, Shortcut
Paste the URL
Click on Next
Type in the name you want it to show
Click on Finish

Give that method a try and see if it works.

I trust you and I am sure it will work flawlessly, however the problem that I have is with all previously saved shortcuts which I have alot of them. I want to find a solution to my current problem which just noticed happening 2 days ago. Is there a way to convert the file type from URL to HTML on all the shortcuts that I have currently?
Thank you,

that's the brave browser causing you issues, it doesn't know how to interpret url extensions or has forgotten and is displaying it as text.  Change the default browser temporarily to say Edge and try again

Hi Rob,

You had wrote MS Edge browser.

Had you read my question you would have seen that I already had tried what you suggested and that did not work.

Sorry Basem, I saw File Explorer but you did indeed say Edge... Then try with Chrome. It is still to do with the browser interpreting the file as a text file rather than a link

Maybe something happened to your defaults or damaged them, as Rob suggested above switching it to something else then back again may repair the behavior or "reset things back to normal when working with your shortcuts" I think Brave released an update also on the 16th, but its odd that you encounter this with Edge too.  I think I recall CCleaner was mentioned in one of your past recent EE posts also here being used https://www.experts-exchange.com/questions/29220185/Remove-IE-11-and-Edge-legacy.html#a43315312  CCleaner while it has useful functions, it can also cause unusual issues too or break things on your system.

When changing the defaults temporarily you may want to wait a few minutes, then restart and then switch the default browser back when you log back in.

I suspect there are damaged files somewhere so it may come down to repairing or reinstalling Brave and backing up etc.

Hi Rob,

Your suggestion did work ONLY when I went to default apps by file type and changed the .URL to open with INTERNET BROWSER. But when I changed back to Brave it did not open the webpage. There are 2 types if files that I a came across in my folders. 1. .URL  and 2. MHT. Brave however did open the MHT no problem but not the URL. I have 2 questions. 1. as far I know I did not change the default on the URL. Do you know what might have caused the problem? 2. Why can I not select Brave as my default instead I am having to choose the Internet Browser?

Thank you,

Hi Jazz,

I never said I have CCleaner. I used it long time ago but not recently in the past 3 years at least if not longer.

Thank you,

Basem Khawaja
Ok. Andrew must have been mistaken then that it was used recently on automatic cleaning, is CCleaner still on your computer though?  It could be an update broke or shifted things, Brave had an update on the 16th, and can't recall your W10 OS update history.

Why can I not select Brave as my default instead I am having to choose the Internet Browser?

Internet Browser will tie into your default or linked to whichever the internet browser default is set to currently although it will not state the name specifically  believe, even I have that for URL.

You should be able to change your default browser under Default apps via a search in the start menu  to Firefox, or Edge, something other than Brave temporarily then switch it back. https://www.experts-exchange.com/questions/29220425/Internet-Shortcuts-Does-Not-Open-Webpage.html#a43316576
When changing the default temporarily you may want to wait a few minutes, then restart and then switch the default browser back when you log back in.
