Simplest way to customize a new installation of Notepad++ to the color scheme I am used to

Hello,

What is the simplest way to customize a new installation of Notepad++ to the color scheme I am used to?

A few days ago my PC motherboard died. Because the entire system is so old, my nephew (who builds my systems) and I decided to replace everything. As part of the process, he installed a new 2TB main drive (Drive C:) and moved the previous 1TB main drive to Drive D:. As result, I still have access to everything on the previous main drive.

Several years ago I began using Notepad++. I remember that initially, it took quite a bit of time and multiple comments from EE experts to correctly configure the color schemes I wanted. Now I have downloaded and installed a new version of Notepad++ and I'm hoping someone can tell me how to acquire the color scheme settings from the previous version (now on Drive D:) and insert them into the new version on Drive C:

In other words, I'd really love to avoid all the time and energy expended last time in getting the color schemes set up.

Is that doable?

Thanks a bunch for any help you can render.

Hi Steve,

The NPP config files are located in the user's AppData folder, such as:

c:\Users\Joe\AppData\Roaming\Notepad++\

In your case, the "Joe" will be "Steve" or "WeThot" or whatever. Close out of NPP, then copy all the XML files in the root of that folder on the D drive to the root of that folder on the C drive (good practice is to save the C drive files to a safe location before overwriting them...just in case). Something like this:

copy /y "d:\Users\Steve\AppData\Roaming\Notepad++\*.xml" "c:\Users\Steve\AppData\Roaming\Notepad++"

Open in new window

That should do it. Regards, Joe

Thanks for the great response. It's straightforward and enabled me to implement it quickly.

Now, although the font colors appear to be corrected, the background is still white rather than the dark teal green color it's always been. Any idea where I can find that setting?

Sounds like a theme issue. Click the Settings menu, then Style Configurator. I don't know what theme has the dark teal green background that you want (or even if one has it), but try the various themes in the Select theme drop-down to see if you find it. If not, click Global override in the Style box, then pick the Foreground and Background colors, check both boxes underneath the colors, then click the Save & Close button. Regards, Joe

Update: I just figured out why the theme did not carry over from your D drive...because it's in the themes subfolder:

c:\Users\<UserName>\AppData\Roaming\Notepad++\themes\

I don't know this for a fact, but experimentation indicates that the latest theme in that folder (i.e., the XML file with the newest date) is the one that NPP uses. So, copying that subfolder from the D drive to the C drive should do it for you. I didn't suggest that in my first post because I'm not sure that copying all those subfolders is a good idea (backup, plugins, themes, userDefineLangs). Regards, Joe

Thanks Joe,

I found an old PPT file with a screenshot of a Notepad++ page:
User generated image
The background is
User generated image
Can I simply enter that color code somewhere and be back in business?

Thanks
