asked on

What is a good windows 11 PC specification?

I am interested in purchasing a custom built PC that is Windows 11 capable
and this machine should be capable for several years to come.  I am fully aware of
this TPM module that Microsoft requires for Windows 11.  What do you think
the specifications should be on a machine of this nature?  cpu, motherboard, etc.

To run just windows pretty much any thing will run it. A lot will depend on what you plan to do with the PC.
One capable of playing video games is going to need a lot better hardware then one you just want to browse the web with or run Microsoft office.
That said I typically don't recommend going anything less than an i5 processor (or Razen 5 series for AMD) and with current memory prices at least 8 GB ram (but more doesn't hurt) and your probably going to want around minimum 250 GB SSD but that is fairly easy to fill.

will not run Windows 11.   Microsoft relented from the 8th gen and will let insiders install on a 7th gen (probably because it would be a big flop otherwise), but I'd stick with an 8th gen if you want to run it years into the future.

(they make 10th gen i5 processors) i5 is the series not the generation and should run windows 11 fine.

I would wait at least until windoze 11 has been officially released. The hardware compatibility list can change until that happens. Once released, I'd go for an AMD ryzen CPU that is on that list.

Is an 8th gen an i7 intel or higher or how does that work?  Also, the machine you talk about
does it have this infamous TPM chip on the motherboard or is that installed after the fact?
Thanks.

At least 16 Gb of memory, I'd probably go for 32 Gb of memory.  Quad core CPU with 8 threads as a base minimum (a gamer would want more cores and if you're heavily into video or graphics work more cores as well).  Intel or AMD is the tossup question.  You can get more bang from the AMDs but the Intels can be cost competitive but use more power than the AMDs.

  Thanks....I was mixing that up.

Thanks dbrunton.  I taught high school chemistry for 37 years in Ontario and that phrase "illegitimi non carborundum"
was my motto!  I am not a gamer.  However, I prefer security with the computer if that is possible.  Is the TPM chip
specific to the motherboard in your recommendations?  This item will change the location of the bar significantly for computer users.
Thanks.

Celeron - low-end
Pentium - a little less low-end
I3 - best low-end
I5 - medium-end
I7 - high-end
& now it seems there are also
I9 - higher high-end ...

Then there are also the atoms, but they are meant more for netbooks & small low power devices.

What about the motherboard...does it have this infamous TPM chip that is being talked about?
Thanks.

I assume that any modern board you buy after the release of windoze 11 will have TPM 2. But you can always check by looking at the specs of the board. Anyway, you said you wanted to order a custom built PC. Just tell the shop you order it from, to make sure windoze 11 will run on it. Besides, it will be likely that the OS will get pre-installed anyway...

The motherboards may not have the TPM chip but most modern CPUs have TPM implemeted in them.  See this list here  https://helgeklein.com/blog/how-to-check-windows-tpm-status-enable-cpu-amd-ftpm-intel-ptt/  for a list of CPUs with TPM in them.

Also see here  https://www.digitaltrends.com/computing/motherboards-that-support-tpm-windows-11/  for a list of motherboards that support TMP firmware (these may have TPM or support for TMP (requires CPU)) that are eligible.  But as rindi says check with the motherboard specs first.

+most modern CPUs have TPM implemented in them.

what sources do you have to back this statement up?

TPM is a separate chip on  the MB AFAIK ... it also has to be enabled in the bios some devices don't have that option in the bios.
