Registry file

Hi,
This is a Windows 10 and Office 365 environment.

I saw the registry file that we have to execute.

When I click edit, the file is as the followings:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Windows Feeds]
"EnableFeeds"=dword:00000000

Questions:
1) How can I know what version of my computer’ registry editor ?
2) If the version of my registry editor is NOT version 5; How can I update it into version 5 (Give the steps please).

Thanks,
Tjie

How can I know what version of my computer’ registry editor ?

it has been 5 the last couple windows versions (at least); it is not a separate component that gets updated
a registry file for windows 7 also shows 5.00
nothing to update

@Seth:

If I want to know the Windows version: I would type in in "Run windows" --> winver; if would give me the version of my windows.

I type in at "Run windows" --> Regedit, and i go to Registry Editor; I click the "Help", and i did not see the version of registry editor.

Anybody knows how to check "which version of Registry Editor" in my computer?. Thanks!

Look at the details of the properties of the EXE file.

You can also just EXPORT a registry key and see what version it puts in the exported file.

Though I agree with Seth, it's been 5for the last 20 years.

RegistryEditorVersion is either "Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00" for Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003, or "REGEDIT4" for Windows 98 and Windows NT 4.0. The "REGEDIT4" header also works on Windows 2000-based, Windows XP-based, and Windows Server 2003-based computers. (from the link below)

Anybody knows how to check "which version of Registry Editor" in my computer?.

that is irrelevant
the format of reg files hasn't changed for so many years; doesn't align with the version of the executable
the only difference you will see in the registry editor compared to, say, Windows 7 is cosmetic
the current path is displayed at the top instead of the status bar - little things like that
does not change how reg files work when imported or exported

Thanks Seth & Lee!

The reason, I asked the above question is due to the followings:

Here is the Registry file:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Windows Feeds]
"EnableFeeds"=dword:00000000

When I go to regedit > Go to HKLM>Software>Policies>Microsoft>Windows .... and I can not see "Windows Feeds" (In my computer);  the file mention "Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00"; So I wonder; maybe my registry editor is NOT version 5.00

Please comments. Thanks!

I can not see "Windows Feeds" (In my computer)
This is expected. This key does not exist by default. If you want to configure it, you have to create it... hence you import the reg file.
If you import a reg file starting with "Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00" or "REGEDIT4",
it will create the Key if it does not exist,
and all values inside.
You just need to have enough to permission to do it.

@Seth:

Sorry.... I am not easy dealing with Registry file.

You said: " when you import the file, the key will be created "

Show me how to do it please. Thanks!

You double click the Reg file.  Or open registry editor and go to the file menu and select import.

This hasn't changed in 20 years.
A registry file can create/modify and even delete Key and value (with the symbole -).

If you want to automate the change, you can use the command line:

REGEDIT /S fileName.REG

The /S is to avoid the confirmation of modification.
